This show happened. When it was announced that Jay Reatard would be opening for Pixies this evening, us dudes became beyond excited. Pixies playing Doolittle was enough to go nuts over, but man, it was just two months ago that we witnessed a fine Reatard (and Hunx/Nobunny/Box Elders/Useless Eaters) spectacle at Harpers Ferry. This announcement was insane.

Jay and his new backing band of Cola Freaks delivered in one of the strangest atmospheres he/they probably had ever played in. The modest crowd seemed puzzled by Jay’s performance and even more so the guy by the merchandise section who called him “Johnnie Reatard”. Either way, the KLYAM gang witnessed an amazing thing, something that afterward had us craving for more; we wondered when Reatard and crew would be back. Was this every 2-3 months of playing Boston going to become a habit? We hoped.

Inspired by Glen’s earlier post, I hit shuffle on my ipod and this is what came up….

Black Lips– “Born to be a Man” (2006)- The best way to kick off the list.

Bill Hicks– “My One Man Show” (1990)- Another one of my favorites!

Pixies– “Here Comes Your Man” (1989)- Wow, the third song in a row with the word “man” in the title.

Beat Happening– “Black Candy” (1989)- The first BH song I ever heard; one of their greatest offerings.

Descendents– “Clean Sheets” (live) (1987)- Damn, I’d love to have been present for this recording.

Elvis Costello– “Accidents Will Happen” (1979)- FUN FACT: In E.T. (1982), the character Michael (Robert MacNaughton) can be heard singing this in the scene when he comes home from school and is looking in the refrigerator.

Rage Against the Machine– “Mic Check” (1999)- Top five best 90s bands, end of story.

Minutemen– “This Ain’t No Picnic” (1984)- A lot of 80s underground shit in this mix.

Primus– “My Name is Mud” (1993)- I remember hearing this as a kid and thinking it was the most fucked up thing I had ever heard, until Frank Zappa….

Hüsker Dü– “Turn On the News” (1984)- Maybe the huskers’ best.

I would not say this list is totally representative of my tastes in music, but I enjoy everything here and I have for quite some time.

My Bloody Valentine- ‘When You Sleep’

Somewhere between The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Pixies lay My Bloody Valentine, a band formed in Dublin, Ireland that would be shoegazing, before it was in vogue. With two genius albums (and when I say genius I mean genius) “Isn’t Anything” and their masterpiece “Loveless”, behind them the band broke up in 1997 after years of lack of creative output all hope was loss for a followup to perhaps one of the greatest albums of the 90’s (“Loveless” was released in 1991). But after ten years apart the band reformed in 2007, playing a handful of shows and again sparking rumors of another album, we can only hope.

The Von Bondies

Description:  While probably best known for the hit single “C’mon C’mon” or the fight between lead singer and lead guitarist Jason Stollsteimer and Jack White, The Von Bondies actually have three very solid studio albums behind them Lack of Communication (2001), Pawn Shoppe Heart (2004), and Love, Hate And Then There’s You (2009).  They are also one of the few Garage-Rock revival bands to actually survive (despite numerous line-up changes) and adapt to the times without changing their sound.

Comments:
First things fucking last, this review will be centered on the actual record itself and not the placements of the songs in the film, which for the record (no pun intended lol) is executed quite well. Ok, so here we have a great ensemble of “Indie” pop artists with music that reflects the various themes of love and loss in the gem, (500) Days of Summer. Things kick off with Regina Spektor’s spectacular “Us.” I really dig her vocal range and the odd nature of her singing; yet despite its idiosyncracies the song still feels very pop like and indeed catchy. Being a huge Smiths fan, I enjoy their offerings on here. I admire Zooey Deschanel and her group She and Him for covering “Please.” Naturally, it does not match the original, but it is not too far off and in fact, some of it’s flaw (though it has very little flaw) is due to it sounding too much like the original and not really venturing in its own direction. I appreciate the fact that my favorite band, the Black Lips (like y’all didn’t know!) are receiving more exposure with the inclusion of their triumphant song, “Bad Kids.” Those that like this ditty, please check out the rest of their discography. Check it out on here! Alright, that’s enough KLYAM promotion midway into a review. “There Goes the Fear” (Doves) and “Sweet Disposition” (The Temper Trap) rank as some of my favorite tracks and definitely some of my favorites of recent times. I feel like those two songs, especially, the latter have hit potential, if they are not big enough already. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bookends” completes the coming of age, twenty-something feel of this album/film and Meghan Smith’s cover of the Pixies’ “Here Comes Your Man” is amazing and truly brings out the tune’s pop hooks, even more than the original. All in all, one of my favorite soundtracks from one of my favorite films.

Grade: A/A-
