“Punk kind of got big in the 70s, but we kind of play like a prototype of punk that was around in the 60s.”- Cole Alexander
“You can get influence from old songs or new songs that you hear, but you can also draw influence from like a really delicious sandwich. You know, you think about how that sandwich makes you feel and you translate that into music.”- Joe Bradley
There will be boobies.

This show happened. When it was announced that Jay Reatard would be opening for Pixies this evening, us dudes became beyond excited. Pixies playing Doolittle was enough to go nuts over, but man, it was just two months ago that we witnessed a fine Reatard (and Hunx/Nobunny/Box Elders/Useless Eaters) spectacle at Harpers Ferry. This announcement was insane.
Jay and his new backing band of Cola Freaks delivered in one of the strangest atmospheres he/they probably had ever played in. The modest crowd seemed puzzled by Jay’s performance and even more so the guy by the merchandise section who called him “Johnnie Reatard”. Either way, the KLYAM gang witnessed an amazing thing, something that afterward had us craving for more; we wondered when Reatard and crew would be back. Was this every 2-3 months of playing Boston going to become a habit? We hoped.
There are not many accounts of this show that mention Reatard. There are some, including our review of the show. Check it out: https://klyam.com/2009/12/04/concert-review-the-pixies/
If you were there for this and want to share any memories or what have you, go for it! It would be awesome to hear other perspectives.

Rock ‘n roll done right will be brought to Great Scott next Monday, December 3 courtesy of Providence’s Atlantic Thrills. We went down to RI a couple weeks back and caught the Thrills playing with opener of this upcoming Great Scott show, Ravi Shavi. READ ABOUT IT.
The Thrills emit some of the finest sounds I’ve heard. You’re in for a great one if the names Dutronc, Black Lips, and Los Saicos conjure up great feelings of joy…and you’re still in for a great one if they don’t! Ravi Shavi is snappy power pop that will get you moving…no doubt! Yale, Massachusetts is also playing on this bill.
Oh yeah and if you’re from the Providence/RI/SE Mass area/wherever, both Atlantic Thrills and Ravi Shavi are playing this Thursday November 29 at The Parlour’s Grand Opening. (FB Event)
The Charleston SC band’s first music video! Cool vid and the song’s production mix is like nothing I’ve heard before. ‘Specially that bass! Check it out.

Band: Gremlins UK
Release: 10/2012
Label: Meth Mouth Records
Track-List:
Side A – You Live In A Park; Hey Mongo; Dont Give Em Enoug Rope
Side B – Ham Fisted Love, So Second Rate
Comments: Gremlins UK is the band in question from Austin, Texas. Featuring Boston expat and Maine Coons mastermind Spent on guitar/vox, Gremlins UK bare close resemblance to the Coons (naturally) so it seems almost like an automatic love at first listen situation for me. This EP is grittier punk rock when stacked right next to the Coons, but Spent and his band-mates are perpetually cognizant of the importance of hooks. “You Live In A Park” ends before it starts, but it’s a blast from needle-drop. “Hey Mongo” is a punchy tune. The chorus in “Don’t Give Em Enoug Rope” is supreme and the fall-apart-at-any-time-but-pick-back-up-again nature of the track in general is something I totally admire. Side B is equally fun. Spent’s vocals carry these tunes (see “So Second Rate”) like Jay Reatard’s did and like how Nobunny and King Khan’s do…the dude knows what’s up. I haven’t heard very many 7″ this year, but damn this is essential.
