Old King Cole Younger, the alias of Cole Alexander of Black Lips, will be playing what looks to be his first show (ever?) tonight in Philadelphia. At least a few Philly newspapers are reporting that he is opening for lo-fi psychedelic band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Is this true? If so, this is great.

Band of the Week: No Age :)
Yessir our Band of the Week is the incredible noise pop duo No Age (Dean Allen Spunt-Drums/Vocals and Randy Randall- Guitar), a longtime and beloved KLYAM favorite. NA are a great example of a modern Punk band still keeping the DIY ethos alive, well, and always ready to knock the corporate ogre on his ass. Our guys will be playing at the Middle East this Tuesday, November 16 at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA. Glen, Ben, and I have seen NA three times before, so we know we’re in for one helluva show! For longtime readers of the KLYAM or even our previous blog, http://wakefieldnews.blogspot.com/ y’all already know about these dudes and their great music, but for those who have not heard of NA and/or are new to our blog, check these guys out, one of the finer bands around today- we cover them frequently. In the days leading up to the show more coverage of the one and only No Age will appear. In the meantime, treat your ears to this new classic, “Life Prowler,” opening track from their latest release Everything In Between (2010).

The Nightwatchman- “Battle Hymns”
As with every Vets and Memorial Day(s) I post The Nightwatchman’s “Battle Hymns” in honor of our brave men and women that serve in the military and sacrifice their lives for us. Yes, for us. Maybe not in the political sense, but through an emotional sense; I do not question the pure motivations of these Americans. So, yes I support the troops meaning I respect them for their bravery and committment, but that goes with saying that I am against the military personel that mastermind war and thrust our young brothers and sisters into harm’s way. Personally, I feel these two notions are inseparable. But, enough about me, the song here is The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello)- “Battle Hymns” and it is dedicated to anyone that is been on the battlefield, regardless of ideologies, nations, or any other affliations. In short, this one is for our badass Vets, hope the best for all of you and let’s all END THIS FUCKING WAR!

Comments: Slumberland is a hot bed for noise pop these days. Pains of Being Pure at Heart released a structured self-titled debut that definitely was more pop slime than anything else. Weekend’s music on this album, conversely, is more of a reflection of the kind of extended shoe-gaze that we just don’t to see much of anymore. The drumming, across the board, is really awesome. The bass lines are typically catchy, as well. The guitars — well, what do you expect? — are loaded with feedback and other sorts of effects that aren’t atypical of this style of music. “Monongah” is my favorite tune on here. For one, it is one of the shortest; we get more “song” than anything else. You’ve got to be a real noise-phile to love Sports ’cause I sure don’t! I like tennis. No, not that Tennis.

“The Caterpillar”-The Cure (1984)- An old Japanese song from one of the most influential bands in history.
“It’s Just Begun”-She Wants Revenge (2007)- Kind of like Joy Division but without the subtilty.
“Little Wonder”-David Bowie (1997)- Electronic Bowie, not his finest hour but is there such a thing as a bad David Bowie song.
“Dig for Fire”-Pixies (1990)- Black Francis doing his thing.
“Fragile Tenison”-Depeche Mode (2009)- From the newest Depeche Mode album, meaning old school Depeche Mode.
“Yellow Leaves”-IO Perry (2009)- From a very talented singer songwriter.
“Happiness is a Warm Gun”-The Breeders (1968/1990)- A Beatles cover done right.
“Guess I’m Doing Fine”-Beck (2002)- Powerful song from arguably one of the top 10 albums of 00’s.

Band Rec: The Castillians !!!
So NuRaveBrainWave is the one site where the authors have one hell of a taste in music. Seriously. Reading that website will give you exposure to music you’d normally never get (exposed) to. And most of the time, it is kick-ass stuff.
Introduced today was The Castillians from Birmingham, UK. A lo-fi Strokes, of sorts…or as “He Said, She Said” Fanzine wrote: “They are the sound of pop losing its virginity all over again. They are the musical magpies of the modern age, taking inspiration and adding perspiration to create a cocktail of potent strength and desire. The dirt under their finger tips is the compost of the rock n roll’s dream, learning from the past and creating the future, the Castilians will show you the light while dancing drunk in the shadows.”

I don’t know Italian, but somebody does and that person translated Jonny Greenwood’s Rolling Stone Italia interview (above).
The bottom line? The new album is almost done. After it is done, the band will go on a big tour.
