KLYAM-005: The Prefab Messiahs – “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” OUT NOW!

PFVINYL
HEY HEY HEY HEY, HEY HEY HEY HEY, HEY HEY HEY! What am I saying? Why am I shouting? Where am I going? You may not know now, but you will find out soon enough. The journey has begun and you are cordially invited to hitch a ride in Bobb’s psychedelic car. Joining us are our four heroes: Trip Thompson, Xerox Feinberg, Doc Michaud, and Ned Egg. Together they are The Prefab Messiahs and their latest Maxi EP “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” is the newest addition to our KLYAM family. But, let’s peel back a few decades…

The Prefab Messiahs were an “80s left-field post-punk/garage/psych-pop” band, specifically roaming and roaring through the streets of Wormtown (Worcester, Massachusetts) from 1981-1983. Back then they raged against the Reaganite era of corporate greed and it isn’t hard to see why their music of youth rebellion and individualism is still relevant today. Indeed, the title “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” is to be taken literally as this band and their oddball pop sound is more alive than ever. These here 8 songs before you are the first soundz from The Prefab Messiahs in 32 years! They maintain the same weirdo psychedelic vibes that made them exceptional originally while producing a sound that is altogether 2015 ready.

Here we are. Today, March 10, 2015. Kids Like You & Me (KLYAM) Records joins hands with our own musical and entrepreneurial big brothers in Fullerton, California’s mega rock ‘n’ roll empire BURGER Records. We East Coast kids over here are putting the Prefabs’ work to wax via 10″ Vinyl whilst on the West Coast, those Burger dudes are releasing it on their classic cassette tape format.

If you want a piece of the vinyl, you know who to hit up: http://klyam.bigcartel.com/product/the-prefab-messiahs-keep-your-stupid-dreams-alive-10-inch-vinyl

“These tunes fucking rock,” you may say to your fellow school chums. “But, when can I see The Prefab Messiahs live?” Well youngster, you’re just in luck, because KLYAM is throwing a show in honor or the album’s release alongside Boston mastermind Illegally Blind. This magical event takes place on Thursday, March 19th at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Joining the Prefabs are some like minded, wild spirits in The Fagettes, Fedavees, and Secret Lover.

NICE GUYS – “COP WALK” MUSIC VIDEO!

Behold the official music video for “Cop Walk” from every kid’s favorite KLYAM band NICE GUYS. Holy sweat Robin, this is the real deal. It’s even got Kevin Bacon in it and he’s doing the Cop Walk too! I bet you can’t do six degrees of Kevin Bacon and Nice Guys? I can, but I’m not giving away my secrets…

Solo Doings: Alvin Dahn

Alvin Dahn, ya say? Alvin Dahn has been writing popular music since the year 1968. Popular is subjective, though. I do not really mean popular because his output is easy on the ears and moving (it is, in fact), but because it stays close by the center of rock ‘n roll’s roots. Like the days when rock ‘n roll had a wider mass appeal. I ran into Alvin Dahn by way of the classic outsider music book Songs in the Key of Z and Irwin Chusid, the novel and website’s author. Alvin’s musical career is not extensively profiled in Songs and there is not much in the way of Alvin in the annals of online.

My first impression of Alvin and his music came from this Vimeo “Clip from Outsiders: Alvin Dahn and ‘Don’t Throw Your Dreams Away”. The first twenty-five seconds are awesome and I feel like giving away what happens: there’s a clip of Tonawanda (no idea where that is… I looked it up and it’s in NewYork), audio from what sounds like a radio station introducing Alvin Dahn, and then there’s a middle age gentleman standing chuckling to himself as heavy metal riffs go off in the background. He turns off the music and says: “As you said earlier, a little wilder than I looked. But what is an artist supposed to look like? You know, you do what you think you want to do at the time, what you’re feeling, not what you’re looking.” I think I paused the video at that point. That statement stuck with me. The rest of the video is an informative narrative of Alvin and some of his music career. I say some because it mainly focuses on Alvin’s early 1990s output, which I mistakenly believed was his only foray into the music world. I don’t think my mistake was a serious error or anything. The world of outsider music is strangely made up of interesting characters, some regular Joe types, some people a bit more ‘crazier’, but who is crazy and who is not crazy in music, anyway? So it’s interesting to speculate what little we actually know about these people. I kind of wanted to avoid that for this piece because Alvin is worthy of a more honest look. Come on, baby.

I’ve recently reached out to Alvin and now have a better idea of the merits of his non-career in music. In some other era, I would wager that if you slapped on some Alvin Dahn on the Juke Box, nobody would think of you any less. When I heard “Don’t Throw Your Dreams Away,” I was like wait a sec, this is a larger than life classical, sun shiny ‘60s ballad. Incredibly eerie, though, or ripe for a soundtrack or something. Maybe I’ve missed the boat on music’s history and I bet I have, but this seems almost like a real original here. But then I stumbled back upon “You’re Driving Me Mad,” which is the heavy metal sounding (besides Alvin’s light vocals) track from the Vimeo. Ultra clean production and exquisite technical playing. Was this an all Alvin affair on the instruments?

Well, Alvin told me that the songs on his It’s Time album (which is commercially available online) were composed and arranged by his truly prior to the professional studio recordings, which took place over the years, 1990 to 1993. He played guitar, piano, violin, percussion, and sang on It’s Time. In 1991, the first ten songs were released on vinyl and cassette, and the two Christmas songs were released as a cassingle. “You’re Driving Me Mad” is a rehearsal version and the other two songs – “Don’t Throw Your Dreams Away,” and “The Devils Candy” were released as a cassingle in 1993. These songs collectively perhaps are Alvin’s most popular work – granted this is incredibly tough to measure – primarily due to the exposure received via Chusid, a revered WFMU disc jockey. [Chusid notably included “You’re Driving Me Mad (Rehearsal Version)” on his compilation album Songs in the Key of Z Volume 2.] It’s Time is the only album of Dahn’s that I own. It stands out for its stylistic fluidity – you will hear early rock ‘n roll, new wave, disco, country, gospel, blues, metal, and Christmas songs. Alvin flows here and there with his own familiar-totally unfamiliar flourishes. I cannot definitely pick a favorite song, but I suggest to Alvin that “The Devil’s Candy” is his most creative. He tells of the instrumentation on this one, “I thought the use of the harpsichord lent a very different feel to the song. The soprano sax made to sound like an oboe growling was meant to show the devil’s frustration.” The fuzzy guitars and harsh drums give this one a dark feel, although the song itself is really melodic, inviting, and yes, yes, sweet as candy.

Alvin’s first 45 “I Left My Yo-Yo Back In Nashville b/w Blue Girl” was recorded and released in 1974 on a private, local (New York) label. His follow-up 1976 single “404 b/w Free Rolling Man” is credited as The Alvin Dahn Band and was released on Alvin’s own Sky-Child Records imprint. Alvin set up his record label and publishing company, Sky-Child Music, because he realized that if he was to be successful, he “needed to be able to release in a larger geographical area.” Alvin received recognition from Billboard magazine for his releases, but he was not able to elicit major label interest. After his third single, he was able to secure a print contract with Big Three Music, the print division of EMI. In the years following, Alvin released and published records for other artists. In 1998, he wrote and performed “Healing Miracles” for a Christian cable TV show of the same name that aired until 2010. Alvin tells me that he has a “huge stockpile of new songs” that he would love to record and release, but it is not likely that he will be able to. I am so down to see what Alvin has up his sleeve!

I was wondering what Alvin thought of the term “Outsider” and what it means to him. He says, “I think that only refers to the people who have never had a break with a major recording company.” I understand what Alvin means because he is not in fact short on instrumental, production, and songwriting ability. He started playing the violin when he was 9 years old and went on to play in a variety of orchestras, choruses, and choirs. What might set him apart, what might have made/make him an “outsider” may have to do more with just how invested he was in his creative output. The directions he gave to his hired session musicians may certainly have seemed confusing and unusual. Alvin attributes this behavior as an attempt to “contain all the large egos and get everyone to play exactly what I wanted.” Alvin also explained his bronchial asthma, which heavily affects his vocal performance. It is hard for him to breathe to support his pitch and this affected his recordings.

My take away is that rock ‘n roll is not perfect and it can be tricky to replicate a complete vision even with the most attuned musicians. We often hear about “musical geniuses” and there is no one way to characterize these folks. Some slip through the cracks (largely), never breaking through to a widespread audience. Alvin has never toured or even played a live show, putting him in an exclusive category of recording aficionados. But his music, which has helped him through the toughest of personal struggles, will seemingly always be. I appreciate Alvin’s contributions even more knowing a bit of his back story, which I incorrectly assumed was that of a musically naïve man who, maybe on a whim, invested all his savings into an extravagant artistic project that was stunning and beautiful. But no. Alvin was doing what he loved and ultimately that made sense to him, free of all outside pressure and influence. Well that’s a solo, DIY I will say, musician for you and one that I think still has a bevy of bona fide songs waiting to delight his listeners, whoever they may or may not be. God bless the man, Alvin Dahn.

Big Mess New Album and Tour (8/29-10/2)

Big Mess Album
Hey all, Big Mess, a local favorite of ours for a few years now, is heading out on a big ass tour and you’d be a damn fool not to attend. Better yet, pick up their debut full-length LP You Are My Sunshine (via Midnight Werewolf Records) on September 16th. Ahh you may think sunshine is too lighthearted for Big Mess, but damn that sunshine song always disturbed me as a child. It still gives me the creeps. Why would they take your sunshine away? I don’t get it. So, it fits with Big Mess is what I’m saying.

LP Review: ATLANTIC THRILLS

Band: Atlantic Thrills
Release: 2/2014
Label: Almost Ready Records

Atlantic Thrills have long been in the hearts and mind of KLYAM: from my first time seeing them open for Black Lips in Providence in 2011 up ’til their most recent outrageous release show (our 17th AT gig). Here we are, with a tangible release of the catchiest, slimiest bag o tricks that the Thrillz have been cooking up for a few years now. I liken Atlantic Thrills to the Lips 2007 widely exposed Good Bad Not Evil – not many people knew of the Lips degenerate legend prior to GBNE and damn did they ever miss out. Same thing with the Thrills here; now’s the time to be privy to their shenanigans.

Our first real taste of this LP came in the summer with their single “Day At The Beach,” rollin bones, hit of acid, you name it, singer/guitarist Dan Tanner sings about it on this oldies resurrection that would make the bands of the ’60s raise an eyebrow or two but dance along just the same. Speaking of which, this is a good times kinda album. A sinister show of respect to the proto-punk, garage, and psych big boys of years past and present. VU, Dutronc, Los Saicos (perhaps the mightiest of spirits haunting ‘Problems’,  ‘Boozin All Night’, ‘Holy Mountain’ and ‘Give It Back’) The King Khan and BBQ Show and Lips whose never-stop mosh and bop in-citations are present from the opening notes of ‘Lie To Me’ and the tribal politikal geetar frenzy ‘Blind Lead The Blind’.

I could listen to this album all day and never get tired – though I have found myself doing this crazy sorta head bobbing that is almost dizzying. The three guitarists – Dan, Eric Aguiar (bass), and Kelly Riley (guitar) – go back in forth with their shouts and screams, a prominent feature of the Thrills. Drummer Josh Towers whacking and kicking hard while smiling his face off. In my opinion, ‘Light Shines’ has these quintessential Thrills features down to a Thrillscience [new word], OHHH OHHH! ‘Light’ has been a staple in their live set for I’d say almost two years at this point so yeah man, of course I’m giddy about this. Oh right, longevity! By now y’all have repeatedly watched ‘Acid Rain’ at the Wooly Fair (classic YouTube) in its fuzzy stompy glory; this recorded version got that wild middle section intact leading Eric on to Punk Rock Suzy. Imma go out on a limb and say ‘Acid’ is the oldest and sweatiest of the bunch. So while the record is thru and thru no frills rock ‘n roll – debauched levels up near 11 – there are a couple tunes ‘Drugs In It’ and ‘Foreign Lands’ penned by Kelly that are Golden Malt Shop jukebox numbers, except the only Malt in Riley’s Shoppe is a Colt 45 and some funny tasting Rice Krispy Treats to boot. The record comes to a close with “On My Mind” and “Give It Back,” I love singing along to these OGs and bumping into people, becoming that girls freshman year mistake or mid life crisis. Selfish but hey these guys have been there before, I think.

Hope by now you get the idea that ATLANTIC THRILLS is the rock ‘n roll album of 2014. Well I’m sure there’s gonna be some other amazing releases, but this is kinda like when we heard Lips for the first time and named some site after their song. Ya I went there! Hear this album, go see this band, and you’ll get the idea why I’ve been so intrigued over the past few years and can’t stop letting people other know what’s up!

Future Days “Tony Plante” Album Available Now

Boston’s Future Days trotted to the studio (Project Sound in Haverhill) several months back to work on their debut LP, Tony Plante, and now that album is out and streaming on their BandCamp.

13 well-recorded tunes, some nice branching out from their earlier psych dominant output. Fuzzy, slap you in the face, garage, paired with crafty VU mediumcore arrangements makes for some nice listens.

Dig on “Drunk at Altamont” – definitely my favorite thing that these dudes have done:

Concert Review: The Migs, Nice Guys, Cult Fluorescent, Slimers, Chillcity Icon @ Wilder Zangcraft (11/24/12)

YEAHHHH
Bands: The Migs, Nice Guys, Cult Fluorescent, Slimers, Chillcity Icon
Date: Saturday, November 24, 2012
Venue: Wilder Zangcraft (Lowell, MA)

Act I: Chillcity Icon – The chillest of city icons, Travis and Kevin are two good heads you can find around the city of Lowell and tonight’s first band. I don’t even know where to begin here: my description will not even come close to doing justice to their performance, you just have to see it for yourself.  But, what the hey, since this is a “review,” I’ll throw in some of my thoughts and reactions. Well, firstly, you have to know about the visual: there’s a table in the middle of Travis and Kevin and upon this table are various objects such as a big bicycle wheel, which the drummers (ohh yeah, I forgot to mention they are both sick drummers) use to get some zounds with their drumsticks. There’s plenty of electronics as well. You could say this is a noise affair, I’m going to say that, despite its quiet, mellow charm. I can’t say that I could watch this over and over again, but for someone that typically doesn’t like 80-90% of music that doesn’t contain immediate pop hooks, I honestly walk away impressed. During the set, I find myself locked in a trance, rarely able to escape it, and that, my friends, usually never happens. It’s cool to watch a performance every now and then that defies the conventional, song begins, songs ends, everyone claps for approval, song begins, song ends, etc. Instead this experience is akin to one colossal vomit session – just hurling out the music until it’s over, feels fresh.  I also really dig how there’s complete silence (or no spoken words) from the two performers until the end when they wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Well, after Chillcity Icon, I feel stuffed for sure.

Act II: Slimers– Some slimy punkers right here – Migs/Mmoss men Keven and Lukas in a two man musical attack on all the senses. The pair are decked out in matching army jackets, it looks like they are fresh off a hunting trip, ahh these two fine lads couldn’t hurt a fly, or could they? They take it all out on their drums and guitars, with Keven shouting vocals and slamming away on the drums and Lukas up front strumming thee olde 12 string and screaming his pipes off as well. If you dig Migs, you will probably be down with Slimers, they have that gah ridge feel like Migs, but the songs are stripped down and a bit more intimate. These fellas know the meaning of punk slime (they ought to, being Silmers), which is great because I have no idea what the fuck that means. Little help? Here’s my grandmother’s favorite Slimers stain, “Spaghetti Ann,” when the band was briefly known as Heroin Mom, ahh those were the days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XOdRrox28ew

Act III: Cult Fluorescent– Saw this motherfucker last February at the Dirty Douglas, alongside New Highway Hymnal, Big Mess, and Dirty Virgins. Easily one of the most memorable sets all year. Now Now, you may be thinking that that is some cheesy stock line and granted the syntax and lack of more enticing adjectives may make it appear as so. Let me assure you that’s the truth and several AIM chat convos w/ Gangbang Gordon have occurred since then discussing that very performance; yep we still use AIM, cuz Facebook chat just doesn’t feel right. Why have nostalgia when you could just constantly relive your life experiences over and over again? Well, I’d certainly love to relive that show experience again, and in a way I can and so can you, here take a gander: https://klyam.com/2012/03/13/concert-review-new-highway-hymnal-lowell-7-release-show-dirty-douglas-21712/ Back then he was known as Between Tall Saints and Sinners, and now Brad is back as Cult Fluorescent. Just like last time, he is a unique performer, simultaneously permeating chaotic, yet gentle vibes. This time around, the songs seem more accessible, but still retain the same atmospheric, dreamlike quality I felt before. [My memory is a bit fuzzy, longgg week, then and now] Brad Cult Fluorescent concludes his set by slamming his keyboards to the floor and removing his shirt (or some variation of that, use your imagination). Do something for good once in your useless, moronic life and like him on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CultFluorescent?fref=ts

Act IV: Nice Guys– Holy smokes! Batman, we’re at Act IV!!! NICE GUYS!!! Throw your panties in the air, these upstanding gentlemen deserve it. Nice Guys are the Nice Whips tonight, because they play a set full of Coachwhips covers. Y’all know Coachwhips, right? Well, if you don’t check out a fun video of them playing at a Boston basement in 2004, right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcgwMO23obA  Nice Guy Matt Garlick was nice enough to post this vid on the event page, what a nice guy! I myself am not too familiar with The Coachwhips, though I know them because of the John Dwyer/Oh Sees connection. I’ve been listening to them a little bit now and they are pretty sick (with Dwyer on board, how couldn’t they be?), so seeing a solid band like Nice Guys cover the Coachwhips is an absolute pleasure. My fellow KLYAMER Glen is a big Coachwhips fan and so he’s as hard as Chinese arithmetic during this set. We both agree the guys’ version of “You Gonna Get It” is a stand out (listen to the OG here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99w92KScdac). This is definitely the most rocking, pumped up set so far and some moshing ignites during their performance, leading up the explosion of The Migs, the fifth and final act. Got some links for ya to gobble up as a post Thanksgiving Dinner dinner,  be thankful for all these KLYAM bands or I should say KLYAM beloved bands.  http://niceguys666.bandcamp.com/ http://www.facebook.com/niceguys666?fref=ts

Act V: The Migs
“”I’ve seen The Migs six times my boy, six glorious times. Magic really.”
“Mister, I don’t even know who you are.”
Manager walks over…
“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave Chuck E. Cheese immediately.”
Ahh fuck em. No, that didn’t happen. But, I have seen The Migs six times and it’s been like Christmas morning each time. And I’m not just saying that to suck their dicks, if I wanted to suck a dick, I could just lean forward and break my neck performing a little bit of the old autofellatio (hey, that’s a word don’t give me that red squiggle line WordPress!), okay I just looked it up, I guess it’s two words. Auto Fellatio or could be combined as Auto-Fellatio. I learned something today. Haha, I love that word fellatio; its meaning aside, I always thought Bill Shakespeare should have named one of his characters, fellatio. Prince Fellatio. Ohhh well, I’ve dived into yet another digression, “I get so lost inside the rooms inside my mind.” MIGS! That’s where we were heading before all this blowjob business reared its ugly shaft into my review! Goddamn, I’ve been listening to way too much Hunx. Speaking of Hunx, y’all like a sweaty, slimy rock ‘n’ roll set? Migs deliver it. Better than ever, for real, in my experience anyway. The audience reaction and/or participation is top notch as well. The moshing continues and never really stops, not even for a breather. Kids are just bashing around to all the classics, “Follow Me Home,” “You & Me,” “Fuzzy Son,” and more. “Fuzzy'”with its waves catchin’, bird doggin’ appeal particularly captures the ears of one Gangbang Gordon. As I mentioned before, best/funnest Migs show I’ve experienced: pants fall down, shirts fly off, and Keven (in classic Migs fashion) bolts into the crowd with his gee tar, as relentless as ever. They close the show with a cover of “Louie, Louie” (the greatest song of all time according to vocalist/guitarist Lukas), but they ask for a little help with the words. To quote Nice Guys, fuck if I know! My dad- Big Guy or Big G as he’s known in hip hop circles- the guy who’s dick would plop right up if he heard The Migs (read here under Migs section: https://klyam.com/2012/10/28/concert-review-sic-alps-fat-creeps-bent-shapes-the-migs-radio-102512/) he used to play in a band in the mid-late 60s known as The Pacers (before the Basketball team) and they would cover “Louie, Louie” at school dances. He told me as a kid that that was the “baddd song” “the song your principal didn’t want your band to play.” Tonight,  The Migs made it bad again, in a good way.
When all is said and done, Craig, my main man, hands me the set list without me even asking for it. He knows the routine by now. I have a set list fetish – any ladies out there share in this bizarre, quasi psychotic, sexual infatuation? KLYAMERS need love too. So yeah, Craig comes through with the set list, Craig knows best. That should be a show, Craig Knows Best on ABC Family. I’d watch it. That channel could use some subversion.

Set List:
“We’re The Migs”
“Follow Me Home”
“Gravestoned 666”
“When She Says My Name”
“You & Me”
“Pretty Ricky”
“Fuzzy Son”
“Take Take Take”
