Old Time SOTD: The Old Haunts “Hurricane Eyes”
The Old Haunts from Olympia had some nice releases in their day – sounding at the best of times like their contemporary (and similar artist if you’ve been hitting up Pandora) Jay Reatard. Very straight-forward and hooky all throughout. Take a listen, if you haven’t heard this tune.
Nobunny For President!
NOBUNNY FOR PRESIDENT!!! That’s the only official KLYAM political endorsement for today, at least from this guy. This song pretty much sums up my thoughts on politics.
Classic SOTD: “Tiny Little Home” (Jay Reatard)
This is the first time I have heard this version of “Tiny Little Home,” which now appears as a Watch Me Fall bonus track. Jay recorded a demo back in March 2008 and I presume gave it the full Reatard treatment a short while later.
SOTD: The Skyliners- “Since I Don’t Have You” (1958)
I could listen to this vintage, black and white, old timey pop magic till my eyes bleed and I go deaf, collapsing into an early grave. I always feel like I am on a death trip when I hear this music, like the world is coming to a complete stop; it’s an odd feeling. This is The Skyliners’ “Since I Don’t Have You,” a classic from the greatest era of mainstream American pop music. Wait, what did I just say? This was the only great era of mainstream American pop music. Don’t worry darling, rock ‘n’ roll never died, your parents just did, it’s time to move on and look past the charts and then look even further past the dipshits that make music that is supposedly an “alternative” to the charts, just look around you, it’s in the air and it’s on KLYAM. Rock ‘n’ roll/punk slime/ that music that gets your best girl wet, it’s all here to stay.
SOTD: Adam Green- “Gemstones” (2005)
I’ve been listening to Adam Green all day, ahh what a day. Livin’ the dream. This song is a mini masterpiece unto itself, one of thee ultimate album openers out there. If you don’t know Mr. Green’s work, click on the video above and start digging.
SOTD: Germs- “Richie Dagger’s Crime” (1979)
Today is just a Germs day! This is probably my favorite Germs number. What’s yours? Haha that sounds like some bizarre personal ad: Hi, I’m Chris I Like the Germs, what’s your favorite Germs song? Someday maybe. You know it’s funny we usually do not cover too much hardcore punk or whatever you want to call it, but this old school shit has always been a major staple in the landscape of my musical taste. Definitely the bands we chronicle here owe a huge debt to the early punker troubadours and their music itself usually pays it back. One can find elements of the Germs in the Black Lips, at least I for one believe so. Cheers to that!
Song of the Day: “100 Flowers” – Lovvers
To start the day off right:
Song of the Day: Cheap Time – “Hall of Mirrors”
If you haven’t been paying attention, you may not have noticed Cheap Time has a new record out. It’s called Wallpaper Music and mentally brings me back to the tones of another In The Red release, Singles 06-07.
SOTD: Black Lips- “You’re Dumb” (2003)
I was watching TV and I thought of this song. Sometimes, I just like to point out to people that they are dumb. More importantly, this is one of the finest moments in the Lips’s discography. It certainly makes me hard, for sure. BUT what KEEPS me hard is this next track, “Say Hello To Postman” aka “Untitled,” both songs back to back conclude the band’s chaotic, eponymous debut album. Recently the Black Lips posted on their facebook page that they were performing “You’re Dumb” with none other than fellow, Atlanta Brave, Bradford Cox! Speaking of Mr. Atlas Sound, what a fine job he did with the artwork for this record. I think I would die a happy man if I saw the Lips do both of these tunes as an encore with Cox and their cocks. Everybody’s cocks!
