First let me I am a big Oasis fan and one of my biggest disappointments is that I probably will never get the chance to see them live. Anyway after another nasty split by the Gallagher brothers, Liam Gallagher,Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock formed the band Beady Eye while Noel Gallagher (and primary song writer for Oasis) slowly launches his solo career. Time will tell who ends up more successful but Beady Eye has released the first song of their yet untitled album. Can’t say I like it as much as some of the best Oasis songs though.
A little later than Ian St. Pe’s original estimate of “when school gets back in” (September 2010), but it looks like they’ve been spending time in New York with Mark Ronson finishing it up.
After four years of being tied up in courts file sharing group Limewire has been issued an injunction that reads “This is an official notice that LimeWire is under a court ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software.” It adds that “downloading or sharing copyrighted content without authorization is illegal”. Limewire has said it will come up with a new program to comply with the court order and put the user “back at the centre” of the music experience
Ari Up (born Arianna Forster) has died at 48, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) has confirmed on his website. Lydon, who is married to Forster’s mother said she died after a long illness on October 20th. Up formed the Slits with drummer Palmolive in 1976 at the age 0f 14 and the original all female punk outfit, became well known for their unpredicatble and outragous antics, breaking the all boys club barriers of punk at the same time. During their formative years they released two very influental albums, 1979’s ‘Cut” which remains famous for having a cover photo of the band topless and covered in mud, and my personal favorite 1981’s ‘Return of the Giant Slits,’ before disbanding. In 2005 the Slits reuntied and released the under appreciated ‘Trapped Animal.’ in 2009.
In a interveiw with Spinner last year Up described the Slits legacy as being a mythology. “They’re like Xena the Warrior Princess. She knew what she wanted. The Slits were totally rebellious and crazy. We were the absolute threat to society. We were such a threat. For our people, we changed the world.”
Blurb from the Hardly Art website:
News headlines don’t lie! The titillating bubblegum pop outfit Hunx & His Punx have signed with Hardly Art, with a brand new full-length forthcoming in early 2011. The new lineup – featuring an all-girl all-star group in addition to Hunx – is currently in the studio in NY and will perform their last show of the year at the Hardly Art showcase at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on 10/21. Find more details on their artist page, stream a handful of tracks over at the band’s MySpace, and stay tuned for more info on the band’s new LP!
Hardly Art is a sister label of Sub Pop Records. ——————–
Greg Paquet, former vocalist and lead guitarist of The Stills, left the band in 2005 after the tours supporting their debut album ‘Logic Will Break Your Heart’ and was replaced on guitar by drummer, Dave Hamelin. Recently Greg has rejoined the band and Dave has moved back behind the drum kit, essentially reuniting the original lineup that created the excellent pre-mentioned debut album (the line up is the same except it now includes keyboards, percussion, and backing vocals Liam O’Neil). Here is the video from The Stills debut album for the excellent song “Lola Stars and Stripes” (I was really tempted to go with “Still in Love Song” though).
Young Adults of Allston, Massachusetts will play their record release show at Great Scott. Filming will be by ExNoise. This show will be the pinnacle of a documentary featuring Young Adults and other Boston area garage rock/punk bands. You could be in the documentary…if you go to the show.
That's my go-to undershirt right there. Good looks, Paul.
November 6th and 7th, the Modfather Paul Weller will be in New York City playing shows. One is at the Best Buy (Nokia) Theatre and the one I am going to is at the Apollo in Harlem. I’ve been re-familiarizing myself, coincidentally, with Weller’s solo work so I’m looking forward to this thing.
Happy 18th 25th B-Day to Stephen Pope, formerly of Jay Reatard bass player fame and currently the chief sultan of MTN Dew in a musical collective known as Wavves.
