Quotes of the Day

Black Lips during a 2009 concert in France:

Cole: If you were the teacher, what would you grade us tonight?
Joe: A+, we know it all the way.
Cole: You would put us in special needs classes. If you were our teacher, you would put us in classes for retarded children.
Wasted Jared Swilley: This is why we are where we are right now. Because our whole life we were normal childrens in the retardeds classes. This is why we act the way do right now because no one understands us.
Cole: You put me with retarded children. I’m not retarded.
Jared: You can’t blame us for acting like retards when your whole world put us as retards. We are a product of this world that is run by white people.
Cole: It is a reflection of your whole generation. It’s just looking in the mirror.
Joe: I bet you wish you were retarded just like us!
Cole: Look in the mirror!
Jared: Your generation called us faggots, you called us white boys, you called us retards, queers, homos. We’re sick of that shit so this is the product of what we became because of you.
Ian: You were probably that kid, too. Stuck in the side room, didn’t have no friends.

Comments: Kid CuDi is practically the only rapper of the past year or so that I enjoy listening to. I really loved Man on the Moon: The End of Day. It was pretty tight top to bottom. This album sort of sucks, though. Lyrical content is pretty lame and the rapping just isn’t catchy. I thought End of Day added a nice mix of psychedelia, but the attempted psychedelia on here overstays its welcome. Fans of CuDi hit singles should reasonably be skeptical of this record. “Erase Me” is great, but what else is there? Anything? “Marijuana”??? It’s a chill song and stuff, but it will not blow you out of the water. Take “GHOST.” It is really dumb, but has a solid base beat. Overall, I am really disappointed.

Grade: B- (80)

The Chameleons “Swamp Thing” live at The Bell House, Brooklyn & “Caution”

The Chameleons released one more album in their prime, the melancholy ‘Strange Times’ which again scored rave reviews but little sales, outside their cult status. Honestly the entire album is magnificent so I went with two videos this time, the first is probably one of my all time top ten songs “Swamp Thing” performed live, the second is an album version of another excellent song “Caution”, enjoy.

Band Recommendation: The Mumslutz

Comments: This is a super-group comprised of Daniel Johnston and LL Cool J. Weird combination, I know. They write tunes that were popular in the southern reaches of the U.S in 1943. “I Stole Yr Kid” has the recording production of a tone-deaf nineteen year old. Daniel says “I stole your kid!” and LL says “STOLE YOUR KID!” just as you’d expect him to. Also just as expected from a band whose first blog entry is titled “you are all minority loving fags” is the song “Wimen R Slavves”. Sample lyrics: “Bitch, get in that kitchen, yeah. And cook me a fuckin’ steak, yeah. And if that steak ain’t medium rare, I’m going to have to put you in your place.” Also, “women get downstairs and get me beer. And if that cap isn’t twisted off, I’m going to make you take the bone right here”.

Concert Review: Gold Star Morning

Artists: Gold Star Morning, Gentlemen Outfit
Location/Venue: Bull McCabe’s, Sommerville, MA
Date: October 30, 2010
Comments: A Few things I remember from Last Night

Act I
: Gentlemen Outfit– This duo comprised of one man on acoustic guitar and one man on percussion- just one simple drum. The simplicity was the key to the music; there is nothing shocking or surprising about GO, and I mean that in a very good way. Their mellow music draws you in with (seemingly) very little effort. For a while I felt like it was Summer again- the music evoked a nice, relaxing, summery atmosphere. The set consisted of a mixture of originals and covers including Jason Derulo’s “In My Head.” If you are a fan of chill, easy listening music then check these guys out.

Act II: Gold Star Morning– Gold Star Morning generated a massive crowd reaction from the packed Bull McCabe’s audience, which by the way consisted mostly of females :). Not too hard to figure out why when you actually hear GSM. The group are masters at rocking out with high energy and simultaneously maintaining a cool, almost calm quality to their craft. The Bull McCabe’s bar was a TIGHT squeeze, but the band made do. They got everyone excited- dancing, jumping up and down, singing along. They unleashed various rocking numbers, but the tune that stood out to me was the slower ballad, “Bigger Than Me,” sounds like we have an FM staple before us. Their set also included popular cover songs: The Black Keys’ “Tighten Up,” Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You,” and best of all The Strokes’ “Last Night,” it was spot on, almost scary. Every member executed the music exceptionally; the band and fans alike made note of GSM’s newest addition, KLYAM’s own James DiNanno on drums. James’ talent and undeniable force is intimidating. Overall, I enjoyed myself and I recommend y’all check out this fine Boston band.
