Why They Are My Favorites

Why are my favorite bands my favorite bands? I think a fairly big reason is because I like a very large catalog of songs from them AND their songs tend to never get old or boring (on record and live). I’m interested in finally rationally concluding who my favorite bands are based on the logic of how many songs I truly love from each AND their best live performance rating.

The Top Ten
1. Black Lips – 42 + (10) = 52
2. Jay Reatard 35 + (10) = 45
3. Walkmen – 33 + (10) = 43
4. King Khan & BBQ Show – 30 + (10) – 40
5. No Age – 23 + (10) = 33
6. Radiohead – 23 + (9) = 32
7. Arctic Monkeys – 23 + (9) = 32
8. Animal Collective – 22 + (9)  = 31
9. King Khan and the Shrines – 16 + (10) = 26
10. Editors – 17+ (8) = 25

Not Far Behind:
X. Sunset Rubdown – 14 + (9) = 23

Question of the Week…?

This question is entirely influenced by The Needle Drop, as is this entire segment. Here it is:

What does Punk Rock Mean to You? Examples?

Just to get the ball rolling, here’s what I think. Punk Rock means to me, freedom to act, sound, look, smell, or taste however you like. The elements of attitude, integrity, and passion are clearly displayed. Artists are NOTsigned to major labels, with exceptions to early “Punk” artists. Lastly, music that is cutting edge and/or distinctive. For modern examples, my favorite punk bands are The Black Lips, Jay Reatard, The King Khan & BBQ Show, No Age, Mika Miko, and Wavves.

Pleaseeeee Comment!

No Age Sneaks!!!

LINK
The members of No Age walk an interesting line. They’re some of the biggest proponents of DIY all-ages spaces out there, but they’re also fully willing to play shows with corporate sponsors. They clearly know their Fugazi, but they’ve adapted the punk rock ethos for an age when even your mom is on Twitter. It’s kind of inspiring.

No Age’s latest enterprise fully fits in with that dichotomy. That shoe you see pictured above is No Age’s very own sneaker. Alongside artist and skateboarding legend Ed Templeton, the L.A. dream-punk duo designed the shoe for Emerica, as Sub Pop’s website reports. It’s a special edition of Templeton’s own Archer sneaker.

They look pretty sweet:

What Do You Get When…

You put two of my favorite bands of all time, Black Lips and No Age, on the same stage at the same time?

A cover of G.G Allin’s “Don’t Talk To Me,” which coincidentally was performed back in November at the Middle East except with No Age and Silk Flowers. The mere presence of the Black Lips with No Age is enough for me to safely say that this cover is way better! Oh yeah and Ian, you gotta calm down. You can’t be jumping on my boy Randy with his broken shoulder and all.
