Mini Classic Film Reviews: Dirty Work…
Full Title: Dirty Work

Comments: It saddens me when I hear that so many young boys and girls have not heard of this hilarious, wacky, raunchy comedy from Bob Saget of all people. No, this aint Full House, but it is just as ridiculous, except in a good way. DW is in the same league as such Adam Sandler classics as Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996) (Sandler even makes a cameo himself), not quite on par with those ditties, but certainly in the same league. If you dig dead hookers, people getting their noses (half) bitten off, and revenge then this is right up your alley- after all that best describes my typical weekend. DW is also special because it contains the great Chis Farley in his last on screen role, and as usual he is wildly brilliant. RIP buddy.

Comments: One of the funniest films I have ever seen period. Just about everyone knows what it is like to hate their job (at least at some point in their life) and that is precisely what makes this film funny. If you have ever taken orders from multiple bosses and felt that horrible swoosh of vapidity that comes from work then this movie is for you. OS delivers a decent story with some goofball humor mixed with a clever take on the 9-5 world; in other words a fun way of saying FUCK OFF to Corporate America.
Grade: A (one of the finest comedies around)
Full Title: South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

Comments: Ahh good old South Park our modern day Voltaire (with dick jokes :). SP has never let us down and this movie is evidence that Trey and Matt can extend their satiric brilliance into a full-length feature. This is not simply a few episodes of SP slapped together, this is a high quality film with a conistent story that never ceases to amuse, shock, and certainly entertain. Seriously, this is the best musical I have seen in years and definitely the smoothest sitcom to silver screen transition. As much as I love the SP series, I think this is their greatest offering, by far.
Grade: A/A-
The Chameleons “Swamp Thing” live at The Bell House, Brooklyn & “Caution”
The Chameleons released one more album in their prime, the melancholy ‘Strange Times’ which again scored rave reviews but little sales, outside their cult status. Honestly the entire album is magnificent so I went with two videos this time, the first is probably one of my all time top ten songs “Swamp Thing” performed live, the second is an album version of another excellent song “Caution”, enjoy.
Band Recommendation: The Mumslutz
Comments: This is a super-group comprised of Daniel Johnston and LL Cool J. Weird combination, I know. They write tunes that were popular in the southern reaches of the U.S in 1943. “I Stole Yr Kid” has the recording production of a tone-deaf nineteen year old. Daniel says “I stole your kid!” and LL says “STOLE YOUR KID!” just as you’d expect him to. Also just as expected from a band whose first blog entry is titled “you are all minority loving fags” is the song “Wimen R Slavves”. Sample lyrics: “Bitch, get in that kitchen, yeah. And cook me a fuckin’ steak, yeah. And if that steak ain’t medium rare, I’m going to have to put you in your place.” Also, “women get downstairs and get me beer. And if that cap isn’t twisted off, I’m going to make you take the bone right here”.

The Exorcist still scares, shocks, and disturbs audiences worldwide just as much as it did nearly forty years ago. The film makes your heart race, but it does not rely solely on physical terror. What really frightens me is the religious/spiritual challenge of movie; it made me convinced that I would be possessed by the devil. I can’t say the same of any other film!

Comments: A Few things I remember from Last Night
Act I: Gentlemen Outfit– This duo comprised of one man on acoustic guitar and one man on percussion- just one simple drum. The simplicity was the key to the music; there is nothing shocking or surprising about GO, and I mean that in a very good way. Their mellow music draws you in with (seemingly) very little effort. For a while I felt like it was Summer again- the music evoked a nice, relaxing, summery atmosphere. The set consisted of a mixture of originals and covers including Jason Derulo’s “In My Head.” If you are a fan of chill, easy listening music then check these guys out.
Act II: Gold Star Morning– Gold Star Morning generated a massive crowd reaction from the packed Bull McCabe’s audience, which by the way consisted mostly of females :). Not too hard to figure out why when you actually hear GSM. The group are masters at rocking out with high energy and simultaneously maintaining a cool, almost calm quality to their craft. The Bull McCabe’s bar was a TIGHT squeeze, but the band made do. They got everyone excited- dancing, jumping up and down, singing along. They unleashed various rocking numbers, but the tune that stood out to me was the slower ballad, “Bigger Than Me,” sounds like we have an FM staple before us. Their set also included popular cover songs: The Black Keys’ “Tighten Up,” Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You,” and best of all The Strokes’ “Last Night,” it was spot on, almost scary. Every member executed the music exceptionally; the band and fans alike made note of GSM’s newest addition, KLYAM’s own James DiNanno on drums. James’ talent and undeniable force is intimidating. Overall, I enjoyed myself and I recommend y’all check out this fine Boston band.

Comments: This is thee live Nobunny album that everyone’s been talking about. The introduction “Today’s greatest rock and roll band on Earth…Nobunny ladies and gentlemen!” met by cheers of all of five people in the audience is more priceless than Jared Swilley’s “This is going to be the greatest live album of all time” on Los Valienteles Del Mundo Nuevo. Live at Thirdman is the product of a late arrival at Jack White’s homestead after a crazy night involving jails and cheerios. Nobunny starts off with “The Gutter,” an old country tune from the Raw Romance tape about spending your unemployment paycheck on smokes and booze and not having any money left over for anything else. “Hocus Pocus” is a dancer. “Sometimes my feet get the best of me” says Nobunny after that one. “Mess Me Up” is a classic off Love Visions that’s pretty raw. The next two are off the Give It To Me 7″ released in early 2009. “Give It To Me” is a punk rocker in the same vein as the fantastic “Motorhead With Me”. Dedicated to all the pretty girls out there is “It’s True.” “I know you heard it all before/And I don’t mean to be a bore but/you got eyes that sparkle like diamonds!/you got a smile that keeps me smiling!/you’re so cute there’s no denying…It’s true!” The raunchy incomprehensible “Boneyard” is just one of those live songs that is awfully hard not to love. Same is true with “I Am a Girlfriend” mainly because of the short “hey little girl” Ramones-esque interlude, but also because it is an incredibly sharp yet raucous live tune. So after that incredible stretch of songs, there comes a problem. Nobunny realizes he can’t play some songs live. No big deal! “I Don’t Know Why” is a soft acoustic number (presumably) that was never practiced before and “Your Mouth” pretty much the same except they practiced it once. So after about ten seconds of “Your Mouth” Nobunny does what he does best. He says “WE’RE JUST GONNA DO OUR REGULAR SONGS.” A ha! Good call, No-no. Fitting (but not really because we know Nobunny is the shit) that he dedicated “Not That Good” to himself (and his band). “It’s So Easy” is a Buddy Holly cover with a few lyrical modifications here and there. “Hippy Witch” is basically inaudible on Raw Romance, but makes sense here. “Monster Kiss” is a Halloween song. Yee! No better way to end a set than with “Chuck Berry Holiday” — the same tune that one fan of mainstream music only (MMO) has called a “catchy song!” Now, that’s something! I attribute that to Nobunny’s vocals and the guitar riff. It’s golden. That’s all I’ve got. See ya later, suckers! “It’s a black man in a white world!”
