Film Review: Pirate Radio
Title: Pirate Radio (US); The Boat That Rocked (UK)

Pro’s: Great music, generally good acting, the women who arrive on board, famous females appearing from famous songs (So Long Marianne and Eleanor Rigby).
Con’s: The whole plot about the government trying to abolish pirate radio
Overall: Pretty great movie from music and sub-plot standpoints. Unfortunately, the main plot and the ending kind of blew. This is probably one of the best I’ve seen in 2009…keep in mind I haven’t seen that many.

Here’s Why:
Killing zombies, discovering new loved ones, and enjoying the simple things in life like a delicious twinkie! Who could ask for more? In a world run by the undead, what are you going to do anyway? Right? In this action packed Horror/Comedy flick, we learn how to survive a zombie world invasion and the seemingly harder task of creating a new family with the only humans left. This is being placed on my list for best of 2009. Don’t worry it is not knocking (500) Days of Summer or Inglourious Basterds out of their well desreved ranks. But, I strongly recommend everyone to journey to your local cinema and see this. The film masterfully keeps its viewers in suspense with humor, romance, and drama. I especially dug the narrator’s rules for surviving a zombie invasion. There were over thirty and if you wanted to live then you best follow them. Some included cardio, have to run fast from those bastards, the double tap: after shooting a zombie, shoot it again to make sure it’s dead, always checking the backseat, amongst others. Overall, this was a fun movie and a particularly great experience fore me because I saw it with a very lovely lady ;).

There’s a few of my songs in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip it”. Drew was really nice, she flew me out to LA, we had a cup of coffee and she showed me some clips from the movie. Usually I say no to film synchs because you just get a short synopsis from someone’s agent’s agent, and I always feel awkward my song will end up in the wrong context. You know, I write my songs for specific people, I find it hard to find them applied to someone elses story. But Drew listened to my concerns and we discussed the scenes she had in mind.
At some point our conversation drifted away and I think we were talking about monkeys, and it just struck me right there and then how surreal my life has become. And how absurd it is when anyone expects any kind of real compensation in this business. Compensation for what ? I’ve been touring on and off like crazy, I’ve put so much work into recording and writing. And in the end what I make my money from is talking to Drew Barrymore about monkeys…
The soundtrack is compiled by Randall Poster, who put together the soundtracks for the Wes Andersson movies among others. His soundtracks are like amazing little jukeboxes of random goodies. I haven’t seen the movie but it seems to be falling smoothly into the category of American movies about teenage love and alternative sports. From Breaking Away to Bring It On.
South of the Border
A trailer for the new Oliver Stone documentary on the Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez. I plan on seeing his earlier documentary, Looking For Fidel first though. This goes hand in hand with Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story for left-wing, biased movies that I generally agree with and enjoy but criticize the tactics.

Here’s Why:
Finally, I can walk away from a film and NOT feel like “well, that was ok, but it wasn’t worth paying X amount of dollars and a couple of hours of my time to go see it.” A sad commentary on the current state of cinema indeed. Instead, with 500 Days we have the perfect romantic comedy, not a love story. The movie UNchronologically shows us various days in Tom’s (Levitt) emotional journey with the object of his obsession, the gorgeous and seemingly unattainable Summer (Deschanel). The flick is unique because it employs many bizarre, but original tactics to convey plot, humor, and a message. These include a black and white video of characters being interviewed on what “love” means to them, a rarely effective break out into song and dance to symbolize overwhelming euphoria, a split screen contrasting expectations and reality, amongst others. In the theater seated around me was a shockingly unhip crowd for such a hip show. No Offense! But, it was mostly old folks and pre-pubescent gals. Typically, not of the hipster persuasion. It was hilarious though, as I entered the room, one of the geezers whispered to me “chick flick.” I suppose. But, then again I will refute that. This film, like Juno perhaps appeals to the femmes more than the dudes, because they deal with romance and not action, violence, sports, or gross out humor. But it is unfair to label such as “chick flicks,” because they have far more meaning and integrity than most movies that fall under that umbrella. I actually think girls really need to see this because it remains very true to life by accurately displaying how they drive us guys completely crazy with their mind games! And at that token, men and boys alike should find comfort and humor in relating with the male lead and his troubles. Overall, a fantastic masterpiece, with truly colorful, believable characters, witty, laugh out loud comedy, endearing story, and very appropriate soundtrack: Smiths, Black Lips, Kickass!!!
