Retrospecting back to their We Did Not Know The Flower Spirit days, Black Lips have released another new tune! You couldn’t get such a contrasting tune if you tried. “Before You Judge Me” is bluesy, 200 Million Thousand “Body Combat” esque while “Best Napkin” is screechy with those “M.I.A” guitar sounds. Jared Swilley sounds more like Khan singing Almighty Defenders than himself. I’m really liking this one. I sort of over-reacted to “Before You Judge Me.” It’s great, but this one is just an awesome nod to old times and mischief.
Black Lips Good Bad Not Evil hit “O Katrina!” will be featured in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, scheduled for an August 13 release date. Scott Pilgrim features Michael Cera and judging from the trailer (which I’m not going to post) it does not look like my cup of tea.
“Black Lips + King Khan & BBQ” is now “Black Lips + King Khan + BBQ” or is it? Will the Almighty Defenders legacy continue or will die just like the King Khan & BBQ Show? Surely, Sultan and Khan are only 2/7 of the super-group, but if there is some bad blood between two of them at the moment, wouldn’t that make things kind of awkward? We’ll see next Wednesday when the Defenders play at Sled Island.
It’s an instant favorite. I don’t think we’ve ever heard Black Lips lead guitar licks quite like what Ian St. Pe has done on this song. Credit, also, to Joe Bradley for singing the shit out of this.
I can’t really figure out how to embed these Vimeo videos so just click the link and watch. It’s very informative as they converse about venues, going on tour, and other fun stuff.
There is a man who lives next door. He has a girl that I adore. I asked him for his daughter’s hand. He said no sir, mister, you’re a wild man. I’m a wild man! I’m a wild man! I’m a wild man! I tried to erase this shame from my name. But everybody said “listen, this is just the same.” Come on people, don’t you really understand? I’m a mean old not so filthy dirty rotten wild man. Consequence of Sound – Starting May 17th, Adult Swim will host a new single weekly until July 12th. Kicking off the series will be Superwolf (Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney). From then on, it’s Madvillain, Killer Mike, Washed Out (featuring Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek), High on Fire, Black Lips, LCD Soundsystem, Cults, and Freddie Gibbs. Just an FYI, LCD Soundsystem’s contribution is the previously released Holy Ghost remix of “Drunk Girls”, along with a video. And if that weren’t enough, the Cults will also have a video premiere. That and television featuring stop-motion animation; what a company.
Black Lips were all talk leading up to the Converse Band of Ballers basketball tournament. Could four flower-punks from Atlanta even compete with the likes of Jim Jones and and Shawty Lo? Nah, not at all. They came in dead last, tied with another tandem of rockers, Of Montreal. Jim Jones was victorious.
