I haven’t made a band recommendation in a while, hell I haven’t even written about a new exciting band in a while either. Well, new to me. The band is called Underwater Bear Ballet and they’ve been spinning in my head a lot recently; so hard I got the spins. They’re from Boston and they have some really odd pop flavor in their sound that I struggle to describe.
We’ve been enticed by the band for the past couple months now and lucky for us they have some new recordings. Their previous efforts were marked by noise and that general fuzzy, homemade touch that you know we’ve always welcomed around here. Recently however, the band recorded the Couch Surfing EP at Mystic Valley Recording Studio (Free Pizza, Littlefoot, and many others) in Medford, MA with Alex Garcia-Rivera. This new EP took the old demos and amped them up quite a bit. In spite of our sloppy tendencies, I can say with certainty that these new recordings are an improvement and truly augment the band’s strong songwriting. Still, I can’t put my finger on who or what this band sounds like, but that’s probably a good thing.
You can see them live at a haus that is white on March 16th and a Cabaret in Emerson that is free on March 21st (with CHARLIE!), I recommend you attend both and listen to all of their music. Do iT!
HEY HEY HEY HEY, HEY HEY HEY HEY, HEY HEY HEY! What am I saying? Why am I shouting? Where am I going? You may not know now, but you will find out soon enough. The journey has begun and you are cordially invited to hitch a ride in Bobb’s psychedelic car. Joining us are our four heroes: Trip Thompson, Xerox Feinberg, Doc Michaud, and Ned Egg. Together they are The Prefab Messiahs and their latest Maxi EP “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” is the newest addition to our KLYAM family. But, let’s peel back a few decades…
The Prefab Messiahs were an “80s left-field post-punk/garage/psych-pop” band, specifically roaming and roaring through the streets of Wormtown (Worcester, Massachusetts) from 1981-1983. Back then they raged against the Reaganite era of corporate greed and it isn’t hard to see why their music of youth rebellion and individualism is still relevant today. Indeed, the title “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” is to be taken literally as this band and their oddball pop sound is more alive than ever. These here 8 songs before you are the first soundz from The Prefab Messiahs in 32 years! They maintain the same weirdo psychedelic vibes that made them exceptional originally while producing a sound that is altogether 2015 ready.
Here we are. Today, March 10, 2015. Kids Like You & Me (KLYAM) Records joins hands with our own musical and entrepreneurial big brothers in Fullerton, California’s mega rock ‘n’ roll empire BURGER Records. We East Coast kids over here are putting the Prefabs’ work to wax via 10″ Vinyl whilst on the West Coast, those Burger dudes are releasing it on their classic cassette tape format.
“These tunes fucking rock,” you may say to your fellow school chums. “But, when can I see The Prefab Messiahs live?” Well youngster, you’re just in luck, because KLYAM is throwing a show in honor or the album’s release alongside Boston mastermind Illegally Blind. This magical event takes place on Thursday, March 19th at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Joining the Prefabs are some like minded, wild spirits in The Fagettes, Fedavees, and Secret Lover.

Holy hell, LOOK AT THIS BILL! Here’s what you’re doing this Saturday (3/7), you’re joining Boston Hassle and us in celebrating the worldwide Burger Revolution! Ok everyone! First show of the year and it was a good one. Tijuana Panthers & The Garden were bringing some west coast love northeastward for a short joint tour. Opening up were local boys The Pits. The Pits consist of a couple of Idiot Genes and a Dirtnap or two. As I would have thought they played loud fast punk rock similar to their other bands. I even saw the other Idiot Genes in the crowd cheering them on. Not it was time for the So Cal boys to provide some heat on a very very cold winter’s night. I had seen The Garden a few months earlier supporting The Growlers. The Garden do not play any actual guitars on stage. The guitar they use is a bass for those deep throbbing riffs. You can call it Vada Vada because that’s what The Garden wants you to call it. I call it fun music to bounce to. They have this cool androgynous style to them. To be honest the first time I saw them I wasn’t sure that they were both male. They started with a block of fast punk thumpers. Then midway into their set I saw Wyatt put down his bass and Fletcher get up from his drum throne. You know what time it is! RAP BREAK! The beats were turned on and the Shears Bros started jumping and flailing around the stage as they delivered their sick rhymes. At one point one of them tried hanging from the pipes. Okay now it was back to rawking which they did with a bunch more loud fast thumpers. Here’s their setlist (or at least what it said on their setlist. I don’t know for sure if they played all these songs.)

Cells Stay Clean

It was now the Tijuana Panthers’ turn to power up. TP did a great job at power punking. They remind me a lot of fellow garage poppers The Soft Pack & Jacuzzi Boys. I’d say that they are more garagey than The Garden and more about the straight forward rock. Not rap breaks from them. They played songs from their latest album such as Sooner or Later & Cherry Street. The best part was when they played “Fired” because I requested it before the show. They even thanked me for the request and gave me a shout out. At the end they did a two song encore (their first one on the tour as they said) It included an older track “Crew Cut” from back when they sported crew cuts. Their last song was a cover of The Buzzcocks’ Everybody’s Happy Nowadays. They covered it well. These guys are just genuine down to earth rock n rollers and that’s what I love about them.
Woah, these guys aren’t as nice as you thought they were! KLYAM Records own Nice Guys make NWA and Body Count look like Backstreet Boys and N’sync in their brand new video for “Stinker” off the upcoming Chips in the Moonlight EP (456 Records). Catch the band at the release show this Thursday (February 12th) at Cantab Lounge/Club Bohemia. The Monsieurs, Black Beach, and Slow Jerks are playing too, so you know you’d be a damn fool to miss it. FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/374262442755502/?ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular
