Two Years Ago Today….

Two years ago today was one of the most incredible days of my life. Jay Reatard and his Shattered Records Tour came to town and being a huge creep I was naturally in attendance. At the time, I had never heard of any of the supporting bands: Useless Eaters (a Jay side project), Box Elders, Hunx and His Punx, and Nobunny. This show served as the perfect introduction to those bands and the last three have gone on to become some of my all time favorite artists. Jay put on an amazing show (sadly, one of his last as most of you know), the best I saw from him and one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. I can honestly say I have never experienced anything like the Shattered Records show before or since.

This video is a terrific example of what made Jay a unique live experience and on top of that this interview nicely illustrates his attitude toward live shows.

Show Alert: Handsome Furs @ Brighton Music Hall

Date: August 17 (Wednesday)

Comments: The Furs played at Great Scott on April 13. I’m going to go out on a limb and say they enjoy playing in Boston to come back again as part of a larger summer tour. We fans enjoy them and look forward to the release of their third album, Sound Kapital.

SHOW: Arctic Monkeys @ HOB [May 19]

New LP coming SOON from Arctic Monkeys. More importantly, though, they are playing at the House of Blues on May 19. You know time flies when it feels like you just saw a band, when in actuality it’s been 16 months or so. I was just thinking about the Monkeys the other day and how I got to see ’em e at the Paradise then a few months later at the HoB. They seem to like touring in America, which is nice for us fans.

So it’s May 19. Tickets on sale March 12.

Davila 666 @ Charlie’s Kitchen (Cambridge)

Davila 666 of Puerto Rico is going on TOUR. They will make several stops in the U.S. Check the list here: http://www.myspace.com/davila666/shows. For Boston area folks, the dudes will be playing at Charlie’s Kitchen in Cambridge on April 18. Now, it’s 21+, but according to the venue site, underages may enter if with a parent. This is a good provision!

IMPORTANT: Black Lips @ Paradise APRIL 14

After selling out the Middle East Downstairs as headliners for two years in a row, honorary KYLAMers and of course (shocker!) my favorite band Black Lips will be moving up in the world of Boston venues, playing at the Paradise Rock Club on Thursday April 14. Vivian Girls will be opening. The Lips will be hitting the road a little later than usual this year and will be touring independently of a record release — their new album has been pushed back to Summer 2011 after initially being slated for April 5.
