Sadly, no Boston :(.  But, that’s okay we had the privilege of seeing PKP at a fabulous show earlier this year. Now, all thee other kids get to see how awesome they are!

Hicks Vid of the Day: “Modern Bummer” (1990)

This is a hilarious bit and the opening track to Bill Hicks’s debut album, Dangerous (1990)

Bum: You got any money?
Bill: Yeah, I do. Thanks for reminding me. It feels great.

Hahahaha.

“The very idea they want me to just give them the hard earned money my folks send me every week.”

Great Scene from Kids (1995)

This is truly one of my all time favorite movie scenes. On the surface it appears to be nothing, just random shots, but within the context of the whole film it serves a purpose- a sort of bizarre PSA, like this is what will happen to you if you get too fucked up beyond repair. There’s also an eerie calmness to the scene (perfectly complemented by the music, incredible soundtrack) that stood out to me from my initial viewing nearly five years ago. The shots that linger on the various, “lost,” homeless residents of NYC are tragically beautiful. It should be noted to those have not seen Kids (1995) (a high crime indeed WATCH IT NOW!) that this is the second to last scene in the film and it serves as a transitional scene; it sets the audience up for the eye opening, disturbing finale. This is probably my favorite scene in the entire picture because it exists on its own, but it also ties in with the work as a whole. Lastly, the fact that the scene is set in the early hours of the morning not only gives a certain quiet aesthetic to it as I mentioned earlier, but also makes the images we see in front of us feel routine, like this is normal, this is how it always is and always will be. Sad, but true.

OR “A wake up call to the world!” as Janet Maslin said in her New York Times review. Here’s a link: http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/134786/Kids/overview

Anybody else affected by this scene? Love Kids? Hate it? Post a comment.

Boston Hassle Underground Music Comp/ Release Show!

Boston Hassle is a compilation documenting various, fascinating bands in the Boston underground music scene. In other words it’s a gigantic middle finger to corporate Boston or all those who have shunned these fine artists that lurk beneath the outskirts of the vapid music industry. Needy Vision, Dan Shea– the man behind all of this says it best himself: “Boston Hassle is an underground music comp that is being released exclusively on a wearable button/music player format called PLAYBUTTON.” Indeed, the format for this comp is unique and quite convenient. On top of that, there will be a Boston Hassle Comp Release Show on Sunday, December 11 @ Great Scott in Allston featuring Fat History Month, Saralee, Exusamwa, Needy Visions, Creaturos, Kid Romance, more!!! Excellent.

In 1787 it was Shay’s Rebellion. In 2011 it is Shea’s Rebellion.

Band Rec: Saralee

Saralee is an awesome duo from Boston; one of the finer bands I have seen in the past year in general, but especially around these parts. I saw them last night at an epic show at Gay Gardens/G.G. Allin’s Broken Home/Nose/Dick along with some other solid souls: Fat History Month, Big Mess, and Florida= Death.

Here is a link to their Band Camp. Check it out!

My favorite song is “Circle of Hands,” very stellar live as well.  Here are some of their upcoming shows as seen on their bandcamp page:

11/21 at Charlies Kitchen
w Guilty Party and Gracious Calamity

12/7 at Precinct
w Fat Creeps and Fat History Month

12/11 at Great Scott

SOTD: Ramones- ” The KKK Took My Baby Away” (1981)

I think of this song every time some bastard takes away some (would be lucky) femme from me.

Cool vintage video! Man, I need to invent a time machine, so I can take girls with me back to the glorious days of The Ramones. And then after that we will journey to all of the annals of great Rock and Roll! In the meantime, stay tuned for more Rock and Roll.
