MPP + 200 Mill. Thousand Revisited

This is just to assign grades to individual songs on these albums, that as of September 13 are in the running for album of the year. When it comes down to it, MPP is not a perfect album. I feel like that just by slapping the “10” designation on it, justice isn’t done. It’s been my thing, at least for the majority of 2009, to grade an album based on songs only. This system doesn’t work too well and doesn’t take much into account. I’ll be changing it (most likely) in 2010. But for now:

Merriweather Post Pavillion
(Animal Collective)
1. “Guy’s Eyes” – 9.5
2. “In The Flowers” – 9.8
3. “My Girls” – 10.0
4. “Also Frightened” – 9.8
5. “Summertime Clothes” – 10.0
6. “Daily Routine” – 9.6
7. “Bluish” – 9.9
8. “Taste” – 9.8
9. “Lion in a Coma” – 9.8
10. “No More Runnin'” – 9.7
11. “Brothersport” – 10.0

Grade
: 9.7

200 Million Thousand (Black Lips)
1. “Take My Heart” – 9.4
2. “Drugs” – 9.8
3. “Starting Over” – 9.9
4. “Let It Grow” – 9.2
5. “Trapped in a Basement” – 9.6
6. “Short Fuse” – 9.8
7. “I’ll Be With You” – 9.7
8. “Big Black Baby Jesus of Today” – 9.3
9. “Again and Again” – 9.7
10. “Old Man” – 9.6
11. “The Drop I Hold” – 9.4
12. “Body Combat” – 9.4

What Do You Get When…

You put two of my favorite bands of all time, Black Lips and No Age, on the same stage at the same time?

A cover of G.G Allin’s “Don’t Talk To Me,” which coincidentally was performed back in November at the Middle East except with No Age and Silk Flowers. The mere presence of the Black Lips with No Age is enough for me to safely say that this cover is way better! Oh yeah and Ian, you gotta calm down. You can’t be jumping on my boy Randy with his broken shoulder and all.

Black Lips Are “Assholes”…Really?

Exclaim News
You can add the music festival All Tomorrow’s Parties to the list of “Things the Black Lips Have Been Kicked Out Of.” In a recent interview with the Village Voice [via Brooklyn Vegan], ATP organizer Barry Hogan said that “the Black Lips will never play again — they’re assholes. They broke into a chalet and started stealing stuff.”

Fellow organizer Deborah Kee Higgins agreed, stating: “We have a ‘No Assholes’ policy. You can play once because we don’t know you’re an asshole, but you can’t play twice.”

Harsh words, to be sure, but we’re guessing that the Atlanta punks aren’t losing any sleep over it. After all, the group had to flee the Indian police earlier this year after being accused of indecent exposure following a raucous gig in Chennai. Compared to the wrath of the Tamil authorities, the words of two foul-mouthed promoters probably don’t seem like such a big deal.

Black Lips don’t need ATP.

Black Lips, King Khan, Jay Reatard, Etc, Etc

Nice little write-up on the great Nu Rave Brain Wave:

I am going to ignore the fact that this is a complete corporate sell out for all the bands involved, but hey, Jay/Black Lips/King Khan are a little older now, they don’t shit and spit (well…) on each other that much more these days, and HEY, it can’t be cheap paying for an apartment that you never live in, but regardless, the best bands in the world will be playing the free Scion Garage Fest, coming to Portland, Oregon on October 17.

The festival will go down at four venues: Satyricon, Berbati’s Pan, Someday Lounge, and Dante’s. Roky Erickson, the former 13th Floor Elevators frontman and general all-around psych-rock O.G., will headline. The bill also includes Black Lips, Jay Reatard, the King Khan and BBQ Show, the Almighty Defenders (the supergroup featuring the Black Lips, King Khan, and Mark Sultan), the Dirtbombs, the Deadly Snakes (reunited!), Simply Saucer, the Dutchess and the Duke, Harlem, Box Elders, the Beets, Fresh & Onlys, the Coathangers, and many others.

May I also say that I wish I lived in Portland, too?

Save Our State Parks FYF Fest

I kinda really wish I lived in California just for this. It’s not often that my top two favorite bands of all time play consecutively at the same venue.

No Age: 10:05pm – 10:40pm

Tim & Eric Special Musical Performance: 9:05pm – 9:45pm
F* Up: 8:00pm – 8:40pm
Wavves: 7:05pm – 7:40pm

O Katrina

NY Daily News
On this, the fourth anniversary of the destruction of New Orleans, let us resolve to replace the political heat of accusation with the penetrating light of reason.

The single most important thing to know is that the city remains vulnerable to another big hurricane strike. Its flood protection system must be completely re-engineered, a project that will cost billions.

It takes work to think the matter through. Like many who fell in love with pre-Katrina New Orleans, I find it hard to avoid getting carried away by sadness and rage.

In honor of the anniversary:
