Band Recommendation: The Shallow End Divers

Every now and again, a mess-around, all-around fun local garage band comes to your attention. They might be new or old or some mysterious combination of those. The Shallow End Divers aren’t fly by night, lets get sauced and record it to 7″ toga wearing ’60s frat boys like The mighty Kegstands but to me they carry on that sweet sloppy casual trick. Yes, a beer or six sounds good to me. These Waltham, Massachusetts trouble makers have been carrying on their jam for well over three years, how could these dudes have fell through them KLYAM cracks? Stranger things have happened.

Sometimes garage is like dull and Shaws bakery cookie cutter throwbacky and all that, but sometimes it just isn’t that. With The Shallow End Divers, It AINT, specially on their most recent single game Dead Man’s Ladder/Forget Your Problems, they fall in that fine camp of rock ‘n roll that is deceptively clean and nicely listenable yet also begs to be heard in a more wayward show setting. Been continuously streaming their 2013 EP Melting Skies and I feel like I’m at King Khan and the Shrines or something, all puppeyed and shit, basking in the ole soul. Doing alright, more than alright, thank you.

Shallow End Divers are good people, I bet right. Setting all the imprisoned free.

TONIGHT!: THE PREFAB MESSIAHS MAXI-EP RELEASE SHOW @ MIDDLE EAST UPSTAIRS!!!

Prefabs poster
At last, we are here. I remember being away on vacation last July, when I received a message from Trip Thompson about doing a potential collaboration with Burger Records in releasing The Prefab Messiahs’ first material in over 30 years. I hit play and was serenaded by those Eastern influenced guitar licks on the opening track “SsydarthurR.” It’s eight months later and I’m still spinning or screaming. That screaming sound is probably me or you or kids like you and me. Ahh, see what I did there? Ahh.

But yes, us kids are collaborating with Fullerton, CA’s Burger Records to bring you The Prefab Messiahs’ Maxi-EP “Keep Your Stupid Dreams Alive” and the record release show is tonight, March 19th, at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. The Prefabs will be joined by next KLYAM Records releasers, The Barbazons (formerly known as The Fagettes), Secret Lover, and Fedavees. Fedavess go on first at 9. Be there early! 18+ $10. Presented by Illegally Blind & Kids Like You & Me.

Band Recommendation: Underwater Bear Ballet

Underwater
I haven’t made a band recommendation in a while, hell I haven’t even written about a new exciting band in a while either. Well, new to me. The band is called Underwater Bear Ballet and they’ve been spinning in my head a lot recently; so hard I got the spins. They’re from Boston and they have some really odd pop flavor in their sound that I struggle to describe.

We’ve been enticed by the band for the past couple months now and lucky for us they have some new recordings. Their previous efforts were marked by noise and that general fuzzy, homemade touch that you know we’ve always welcomed around here. Recently however, the band recorded the Couch Surfing EP at Mystic Valley Recording Studio (Free Pizza, Littlefoot, and many others) in Medford, MA with Alex Garcia-Rivera. This new EP took the old demos and amped them up quite a bit. In spite of our sloppy tendencies, I can say with certainty that these new recordings are an improvement and truly augment the band’s strong songwriting. Still, I can’t put my finger on who or what this band sounds like, but that’s probably a good thing.

Check them out here: http://underwaterbearballet.bandcamp.com/

You can see them live at a haus that is white on March 16th and a Cabaret in Emerson that is free on March 21st  (with CHARLIE!), I recommend you attend both and listen to all of their music. Do iT!

Show Review: Tijuana Panthers & The Garden @ Great Scott (1/6/15)

Review by Joanna Trachtenberg

Ok everyone! First show of the year and it was a good one. Tijuana Panthers & The Garden were bringing some west coast love northeastward for a short joint tour. Opening up were local boys The Pits. The Pits consist of a couple of Idiot Genes and a Dirtnap or two. As I would have thought they played loud fast punk rock similar to their other bands. I even saw the other Idiot Genes in the crowd cheering them on. Not it was time for the So Cal boys to provide some heat on a very very cold winter’s night. I had seen The Garden a few months earlier supporting The Growlers. The Garden do not play any actual guitars on stage. The guitar they use is a bass for those deep throbbing riffs. You can call it Vada Vada because that’s what The Garden wants you to call it. I call it fun music to bounce to. They have this cool androgynous style to them. To be honest the first time I saw them I wasn’t sure that they were both male. They started with a block of fast punk thumpers. Then midway into their set I saw Wyatt put down his bass and Fletcher get up from his drum throne. You know what time it is! RAP BREAK! The beats were turned on and the Shears Bros started jumping and flailing around the stage as they delivered their sick rhymes. At one point one of them tried hanging from the pipes. Okay now it was back to rawking which they did with a bunch more loud fast thumpers. Here’s their setlist (or at least what it said on their setlist. I don’t know for sure if they played all these songs.)

Express/27
Cells Stay Clean
Crystal Clear
Slice Em’
I’ll Stop By Tomorrow Night
Rainbow
*rap break*
Hologram
Jester’s Game
Everything Has A Face
I Want That Nose
Cloak
*end rap break*
Vexation
We Don’t Need Em’
New Song
Surprise
I’ll Be Right Here
Woman
This Can Build Us a Home
What We Are
You’re Down
Apple/Vada Vada
Grass

It was now the Tijuana Panthers’ turn to power up. TP did a great job at power punking. They remind me a lot of fellow garage poppers The Soft Pack & Jacuzzi Boys. I’d say that they are more garagey than The Garden and more about the straight forward rock. Not rap breaks from them. They played songs from their latest album such as Sooner or Later & Cherry Street. The best part was when they played “Fired” because I requested it before the show. They even thanked me for the request and gave me a shout out. At the end they did a two song encore (their first one on the tour as they said) It included an older track “Crew Cut” from back when they sported crew cuts. Their last song was a cover of The Buzzcocks’ Everybody’s Happy Nowadays. They covered it well. These guys are just genuine down to earth rock n rollers and that’s what I love about them.

Music Video: Nice Guys – “Stinker”

Film by Andrew Gibson

Woah, these guys aren’t as nice as you thought they were! KLYAM Records own Nice Guys make NWA and Body Count look like Backstreet Boys and N’sync in their brand new video for “Stinker” off the upcoming Chips in the Moonlight EP (456 Records). Catch the band at the release show this Thursday (February 12th) at Cantab Lounge/Club Bohemia. The Monsieurs, Black Beach, and Slow Jerks are playing too, so you know you’d be a damn fool to miss it. FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/374262442755502/?ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular
