Comments: The Orwells caught my attention earlier this year and they’ve damn secured that attention now. Remember When is the band’s debut full-length. It’s a loud listen, exploding with blasts of unrefined rock N roll slime. The pop slime that sticks to your brain like a piece of Wrigley’s chewing gum. Local reference indeed. I shit you not when I say these tracks stack up to the best of comparative material from recent years i.e. slightly to a lot better known bands like Cum Stain, Natural Child, Ty Segall, Diarrhea Planet, and Thee Oh Sees. The in-your-face production tactics are well-oiled, particularly on “Suspended,” which has some big echo on the vocals. It’s like if Julian Casablancas got the shit kicked out of him during the making of Is This It and wanted revenge via the recording process. That kind of thing. The shimmy shimmy might be what Reatard wanted to make when he was 15 and bashing on a pair of buckets and a shitty guitar, if only he had a few other older dudes around to make it ‘fuller’. Well, that eventually happened. The point I’m really trying to make it is that in an age of bands sprouting in an instant it’s always quite excellent to hear a youthful effort that particularly stands out. Orwells can just as fine do the slower/slacker (example, “Never Ever”) thing as the fast thing (example, “Mallrats”) as the Arctic Monkeys thing (example, “Ancient Egypt”) as the choice old tyme intro samples (“Under the Flowers” particularly is CHOICE). If this is their Animal Farm, will their next be Nineteen Eighty Four?

Grade: A (93)

Boston Hassle Underground Music Comp/ Release Show!

Boston Hassle is a compilation documenting various, fascinating bands in the Boston underground music scene. In other words it’s a gigantic middle finger to corporate Boston or all those who have shunned these fine artists that lurk beneath the outskirts of the vapid music industry. Needy Vision, Dan Shea– the man behind all of this says it best himself: “Boston Hassle is an underground music comp that is being released exclusively on a wearable button/music player format called PLAYBUTTON.” Indeed, the format for this comp is unique and quite convenient. On top of that, there will be a Boston Hassle Comp Release Show on Sunday, December 11 @ Great Scott in Allston featuring Fat History Month, Saralee, Exusamwa, Needy Visions, Creaturos, Kid Romance, more!!! Excellent.

In 1787 it was Shay’s Rebellion. In 2011 it is Shea’s Rebellion.

Band Rec: Saralee

Saralee is an awesome duo from Boston; one of the finer bands I have seen in the past year in general, but especially around these parts. I saw them last night at an epic show at Gay Gardens/G.G. Allin’s Broken Home/Nose/Dick along with some other solid souls: Fat History Month, Big Mess, and Florida= Death.

Here is a link to their Band Camp. Check it out!

My favorite song is “Circle of Hands,” very stellar live as well.  Here are some of their upcoming shows as seen on their bandcamp page:

11/21 at Charlies Kitchen
w Guilty Party and Gracious Calamity

12/7 at Precinct
w Fat Creeps and Fat History Month

12/11 at Great Scott

Word.

SOTD: Ramones- ” The KKK Took My Baby Away” (1981)

I think of this song every time some bastard takes away some (would be lucky) femme from me.

Cool vintage video! Man, I need to invent a time machine, so I can take girls with me back to the glorious days of The Ramones. And then after that we will journey to all of the annals of great Rock and Roll! In the meantime, stay tuned for more Rock and Roll.

Finally Next Day Blinds…

Who? Haha, well I bet you know some of the members or their respective bands that became popular in the coming years. Notable members include Cole Alexander, Jack Hines, and Ben Eberbaugh of the Black Lips and Spooks as well as Coline Mee of Deerhunter, amongst others. Naturally, line up changes have occured in those groups and those do not represent the current line ups for either band, but all of those dudes made notable contributions to the aforementioned classic Atlanta bands.

Warner Music Group Will Sign Ya, If…

Warner Music Group – Form S-4 As Filed 12/16/04

“We are also dependent on signing and retaining songwriters who will write the hit songs of today and the classics of tomorrow under terms that are economically attractive to us.”

Not to purposefully sound like Steve Albini but just pointing out the stupidity in the business of major labels and the general disregard for their artists. If being a tool in the music industry is something that interests you, this is the company for you!
