On Friday February 4, 2011, California rockers/bf/gf Wavves and Best Coast will be playing a show together at the Paradise Rock Club. There are about 26 other dates and you can check them out here: http://www.spin.com/articles/wavves-and-best-coast-plan-winter-tour. This will be Wavves third outing in the Boston area since June. They headlined Great Scott in June (a good show indeed that Chris & I saw) and then just a couple of weeks ago opened for Phoenix at the Agganis Arena (a very good one according to Matt). Best Coast headlined the Middle East Downstairs with UK punk band Male Bonding in late September.
According to Bethany Cosentino, front-woman in Best Coast: “We’re both in summery California bands and I think by doing the tour in winter, we’re bringing summer to places where it’s fucking freezing.”
Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa will be at the Paradise Rock Club to play two shows next Sunday. The first is at 5:30 and is all ages. The second is at 9:30 and is 18+.
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart will be playing tonight at the Paradise Rock Club and unfortunately I will not be in attendance, but I highly recommend this show to all because they are one of my favorite bands right now. I might see Louis C.K. at my school (UMass Lowell); it’s not a substitute, but it will do.
The deal with the Paradise is that they shifted the stage, knocked down some of the walls that separated the hallway leading to the real entrance, and made the green rooms more band-friendly. At any rate, the place is bigger (capacity-wise) and less awkward.

I don’t know if me posting upcoming concerts is getting on anyone’s nerves, but I really don’t care, because I’m too damn excited! I saw The Pains of Being Pure At Heart at The Middle East almost exactly a year ago and they were pretty good. At the time, I was only a teeny bit familiar with their music. Then I listened to their LP and I was blown away. I think knowing the tunes this time around will make the show even greater.
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart- Paradise Rock Club, Boston on Wednesday, October 20- Yeah, you know this shit is KLYAM Recommended.
Why do soooooo many of my favorite shows have to be during the week?!

You know that pole in front of the stage at the Paradise Rock Club, the one that lead singers often take note of – and not in a nice way?
It won’t be a problem after Labor Day.
The pole isn’t going anywhere – it provides structural support – but the Paradise stage is moving about 20 feet toward the Commonwealth Avenue side of the building.

No concerts from July 1 to September 7. Concerts that would be held at Paradise are probably going to be relocated at fellow Live Nation venues like House of Blues and the Orpheum as well as the new Royale.
I'm pretty sure our friend C.O wore this shirt when we saw him!
Artists: Girls, Dum Dum Girls, Leisure Location: Paradise Rock Club, Boston Date: Thursday, April 1, 2010 Grade: B+/A-
Act I: Leisure – They were ok, nothing special. Clearly, they had musical chops and they were decent performers, but the music just never came through for me. I didn’t hear great songs. In other words, the parts were better than the whole; for me, with a great band, live or on record, but especially live it’s vice versa.
Glen: Unlike Chris, I actually dug this band. As I said to him, I couldn’t really find a problem with their music. In other words, I might not have loved their brand of glam/dance rock, but I thought it was pretty catchy and the lead singer was a funny character. They reminded me of the Lovely Feathers with the keyboard and song structures.
Set List: follow me

Act II: The Dum Dum Girls – Things start to heat up. I saw these girls last October, opening for King Khan & BBQ and honestly they didn’t floor me. Don’t get me wrong, I thought they were decent, but nothing notable. This time around, I appreciated their performance more. I don’t know if anything changed with them, so it was probably just me. Anyway, I really dug their vocals the most. Still, this time, they didn’t send me flying off my rocker, but I thought they did a good job and I enjoyed it. Not to mention, as before, their dress and body movements on stage both caught my eye. I love the head bobbing and almost elegance in their appearance. I mean they look rather attractive in their all black get up and it’s certainly a sight for sore eyes!
Glen: Of course, it’s hard to go without mentioning the DDG appearance unless one wears a blind fold during their performance. They played a tight set that showcased some new songs like “Bhang, Bhang,” my favorite “Jail La La,” “Rest of Our Lives,” and “Yours Alone.” Also played were older ones like “Catholicked,” and some other song that I can’t think of the name, but they’ve been playing for a while. Like I said in my review of their 2010 album I Will Be, the drum beats are absolutely fantastic, but like Chris said their voices are beautiful.
Act III: Girls: Ahh my favorite Girls are Guys! Of course, the band I came to see and they did not disappoint. The group opened with the classic, “Laura” and immediately all in attendance it seemed, began singing along. The music was nice and soft, almost warm? lol The lights were a flashin’ but slowly and matched the music perfectly. Singer/Guitarist, Christopher Owens modestly rocked out with his funky, moonwalking dance moves. He really looked fly, definitely flyer than Whacko Jacko. They continued the set with other Album classics, such as “Darling,” “Ghost Mouth,” and their signature number, “Lust For Life,” which unsurprisingly garnered the greatest reaction from the audience. They created one hell of a song transition, actually three song transition, from the soft, yet infinitely endearing, “Hellhole Ratrace,” into the noisy (a first for the evening), garage like, “Morning Light,” then finally into the Grease resembling, “Big Bad Mean Motherfucker,” which also generated large enthusiasm from the crowd, including a trio of femmes gyrating on stage. Girls also played about six or seven non-Album lol tracks, including the new song, “Substance.” This is sort of a criticism of mine, but not really. Let me explain… Well, I anticipated knowing all but one or two songs they would perform, three tops! This was considering, I knew and loved all of their record. Incidentally, I didn’t know any of the tunes that didn’t appear on their record. Ohh well, I suppose this is not their flaw, but a bad on my part as a fan. Anyway, they came back for a sound encore featuring the classic, “Lauren Marie,” a track I was waiting for all night! Overall, they were a fabulous live band and I recommend everyone to see them, if you get the chance.
Glen:Like Chris said that three song transition — Hellhole to Morning Light to Big Bad — was awesome. It will go down in the history books as one of the most memorable parts of a concert for me. My only response to them playing five or six non-Album tunes is that they toured behind Album last fall. They are probably getting ready for whatever is next and want to get a feel for the new material.
Bands: Beach House, Bachelorette Venue: Paradise Rock Club (Boston, MA) Date: March 28, 2010
Act One – Bachelorette – Bachelorette was boring. It’s not really the music that’s boring, it’s more of the process as a whole. She plays guitar for thirty seconds, turns the loop on, records into one microphone, loops that, turns on a drum pad, and then does another round of singing. She reminded me (at her best) of High Places and at her worst like your average shitty electronically styled opening act (cough Many Mansions cough). Some dude was apparently loving it so much that he thought it was wise to shout “you boring fucks need to learn how to move your body” after her first song. Yeah, maybe if I was tripping on shrooms like you…idiot. llalallalaallalala bum allalalalalal bum. Relaxing stuff, but annoying.
Act Two – Beach House – A very kind band. Kicking off the set with “Walk in the Park,” my personal favorite, was a wise choice. I could tell the sold-out crowd was made up of a lot of Teen Dream era fans so this opener definitely resonated with all of us. Lead singer and keyboardist Victoria Legrand amazingly executed her parts and that’s not without saying guitarist and back-up singer Alex Scally wasn’t awesome. He was. Speaking of Teen Dream, somebody commented that they played every song off of that. And you know what? I think they did! They also played a few old songs that many people were able to appreciate. Legrand and Scally’s between song banter was charming as they said things like “you guys are very lovely. Thank you for having us.” They genuinely seemed happy to be playing. They ended the set with Teen Dream closer “Take Care,” but that was only a little tease. It’s a great closing track and would certainly lead one to believe that was all they had left. But no! They came back for a one song encore of “10 Mile Stereo,” another great ditty off of Teen Dream. This song is the band’s heaviest offering (at least live) and I actually can’t imagine a better choice. Overall, I really enjoyed listening to one of my favorite albums of the year (and the other songs) performed in such a relaxing and enjoyable setting. If you haven’t heard Beach House, I’d recommend giving them a try.
