SOTD: Gentlemen Jesse- “Rest Of My Days” (2008)

So, unforunately KLYAM does not control time zones. Yeah, this is a massive dissapointment for me too. Apparently we cannot be in two places at once, fuck! This translates into us missing Gentlemen Jesse & His Men at Great Scott last night :(. We were too busy witnessing the awesomeness of Ty Segall live for the very first time at the Space Gallery in Portland, Maine!; Strange Boys and White Fence were nothing short of pure rock and roll/high quality entertainment as well. Okay, enough of that peter puffing for now, back to thee gentlemen. We’ve seen them a few times and they rock, of course, so it was too bad we missed one of our favorite Atlanta bands. Here’s a personal favorite, “Rest Of My Days,” that I like to sing when I walk to the liquor store or sleep in extremely late. Cheers!

SOTD: Oblivians- “Bad Man” (1996)

Keeping up with Glen’s recent Girls of the Gravitron post, I thought I would stick with the classic Memphis tradition and make the song of the day my favorite Oblivians number, “Bad Man.” I do not know much from the Oblivians’s catalog, as I am still getting my feet wet, but for the past few years I have dabbled in their music every now and then. I think I am going to try and listen to more of their shit for once. “Bad Man” just has this great anthemic feel to it, and I am a man who loves his anthems. Enjoy.

Damn, this song was recorded when I was in Kindergarten!

SOTD: Natti Child- “Ray Thompson’s Blues” (2010)

This song is dedicated to Jeff Spicoli!  It is the badass version of every classic Beach Boys tune. All you need is some sun, some hunnies, and some brews, and you’re all set. It reminds me of the turbulant age of thirteen when you discover the wonders of masturbation, drugs, and Karl Marx. This is an older track, but the band is coming out with an LP this very month. Last year’s 1971 was one of the best, so I’m really pumped for this 2012 follow up. Natural Child is one of the best bands going right now and the new record is called For the Love of the Game out on Burger Records on 4/20!

SOTD: “Shag Carpet” (Wallpaper)

This is a little known gem of sorts from Wallpaper, a band that was at one point signed to K Records. “Shag Carpet” is a track from On The Chewing Gum Ground (2008, K Records). This song is interesting because it’s the perfect combination of Is This It era riffage and tougher/Australian-sounding punk. Recommended listening to those of all rock and roll backgrounds, whether you prefer early 2000s revival or some of the more recent surf/lo-fi/punk stuff.

SOTD: The Duprees- “You Belong To Me” (1958)

This is a classic that has unforntuntely slipped through the cracks over the years. This song was brought to my attention by none other than Atlas Sound aka Bradford Cox, through his own cover version. If radio stations really played classic rock, then songs like this would be on it, at least through my perspective. Instead Classic (Corporate!) Rock stations play the likes of Guns N Roses and Foreigner or whatever the fuck they are calling classic rock these days. Then again they play some solid stuff too, but it’s not the same, it’s not the same rock and roll as this. Oh well, at least we have each other. Enjoy.

P.S. below is the Atlas Sound cover from the Altitude Sickness EP.
