BOSTON — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said Thursday the chances of him running to replace Democrat Edward M. Kennedy in the U.S. Senate are “slim to none” but he will not rule it out.The three-time World Series champion said he retired from baseball in March to spare his family the downside of the public spotlight. He has also invested millions in his fledgling video-gaming business, 38 Studios.
Yet the 42-year-old told a Boston radio station that Massachusetts is in “desperate” need of fresh political blood.
“This state, next to Illinois, is probably looked on as one of the most corrupt, laughable political scenes in the nation, and it should be just the opposite,” he said during one of his regular appearances on WEEI-AM, a sports radio station. “I think there’s so much broke here, that the fixing piece, I don’t think you’d have to look very hard to pick up the pieces of debris and start to reform and fix it.”
While Schilling has never run for or held political office, he said it’s an asset because he’s unencumbered by special interest connections.
“Slim to none” people! Stop the hype.
Looks like this story has a fairly happy ending…
LOS ANGELES — Residents began returning to their homes Wednesday in several neighborhoods that had been threatened by a large wildfire chewing through the foothills near Los Angeles as cooler temperatures and moister air allowed firefighters to begin gaining in their battle to control the blaze.
Nice little write-up on the great Nu Rave Brain Wave:
I am going to ignore the fact that this is a complete corporate sell out for all the bands involved, but hey, Jay/Black Lips/King Khan are a little older now, they don’t shit and spit (well…) on each other that much more these days, and HEY, it can’t be cheap paying for an apartment that you never live in, but regardless, the best bands in the world will be playing the free Scion Garage Fest, coming to Portland, Oregon on October 17.
The festival will go down at four venues: Satyricon, Berbati’s Pan, Someday Lounge, and Dante’s. Roky Erickson, the former 13th Floor Elevators frontman and general all-around psych-rock O.G., will headline. The bill also includes Black Lips, Jay Reatard, the King Khan and BBQ Show, the Almighty Defenders (the supergroup featuring the Black Lips, King Khan, and Mark Sultan), the Dirtbombs, the Deadly Snakes (reunited!), Simply Saucer, the Dutchess and the Duke, Harlem, Box Elders, the Beets, Fresh & Onlys, the Coathangers, and many others.
May I also say that I wish I lived in Portland, too?
I kinda really wish I lived in California just for this. It’s not often that my top two favorite bands of all time play consecutively at the same venue.
Stage 1:
Black Lips: 11:00pm – 11:45pm
No Age: 10:05pm – 10:40pm
Tim & Eric Special Musical Performance: 9:05pm – 9:45pm
F* Up: 8:00pm – 8:40pm
Wavves: 7:05pm – 7:40pm
Times New Viking: 6:15pm – 6:45pm
Dan Deacon: 5:10pm – 5:55pm
Crystal Antlers: 4:15pm – 4:45pm
The Strange Boys: 3:25pm – 3:55pm
Woods: 2:35pm – 3:05pm
Avi Buffalo: 1:45pm – 2:15pm

The Walt Disney empire is to buy the superheroes stable Marvel Entertainment for $4bn (£2.5bn) in a star-studded Hollywood deal that unites family names such as Mickey Mouse with lucrative characters including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and the X-Men.Disney hopes to put Marvel’s 5,000 characters to work on its television channels and in video games, theme parks and movies. The agreed takeover is for a mixture of cash and stock, with Disney shares accounting for roughly 40% of the buyout price.
The tie-up unites two companies with similar business models – they both take characters which capture the popular imagination and promote them vigorously around the world on every possible media platform and through third-party licensing deals.
This vastly continues the rampant pandemic known as infantilization.

Beloved Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi will announce his retirement Monday morning during a 10:45 a.m. press conference, ending his against-all-odds career after 13 NFL seasons.
Related linksThe development is not entirely unexpected – when he missed over a week’s worth of training camp with no apparent injury, it seemed possible that he was being given time to assess whether he wanted to continue his pursuit of a 14th pro season.
It is also probable that Bill Belichick informed Bruschi that he would not be in New England’s plans this season, leading to his decision to call it a career.
A third-round draft pick out of Arizona in 1996, where he became the NCAA’s all-time sacks leader as an undersized defensive end, Bruschi made his bones in New England initially as a special-teams player – his 17 tackles for that unit as a rookie was third on the club.
This is pretty surprising. He’ll be remembered as many fans’ favorite player.

On this, the fourth anniversary of the destruction of New Orleans, let us resolve to replace the political heat of accusation with the penetrating light of reason. The single most important thing to know is that the city remains vulnerable to another big hurricane strike. Its flood protection system must be completely re-engineered, a project that will cost billions.
It takes work to think the matter through. Like many who fell in love with pre-Katrina New Orleans, I find it hard to avoid getting carried away by sadness and rage.
In honor of the anniversary:
