This time I got an interesting mix up, Nine Inch Nails ‘Hurt’ as covered by Johnny Cash.
Both are pretty haunting to me, but I have always been a NIN fan so I am going with that, but it was a very close choice.

johnny, but as you said both are very haunting.
I love the NIN original, one of Trent’s finest pieces of music and within the context of the entire Downward Spiral album it fits perfectly, but Cash fucking killed (in the great sense of the word) this song. This is the greatest cover song ever imo, it has all the right credentials for a perfect cover. Takes the song to new levels and adds the artists’ personal take on it, whilst still remaining true to the orginal. I’d also say its Cash’s best for that matter. He just reaches an emotional state most artists wouldn’t dare to enter and understandably so. When Cash is singing this song it is HIS song, only in the literal sense is this a cover of a NIN song, emotionally this is Cash. That’s what makes a great cover, when it truly becomes the coverers (lol) own. Mind you, I am a wayyy bigger Cash fan than NIN.
This was the closest choice for me, cover song wise, but after another couple of listens and your comments have got me rethinking my postion. I would say Hurt is probably the best song Trent has ever and Cash does do an amazing job with it, at the end of the day it just comes down tohe me not admitting that NIN greatest song can be outdone by Johnny Cash, I got nothing against Cash but I have a real adversion to admiting that, but I am real close to saying that.
