Comments: Not exactly the biggest fan of Kurt Cobain’s singing voice or what is grunge music, I was unsure what to expect from this critically hailed record. “Serve the Servants” is the perfect speed/heaviness  that I’m personally looking for. The screaming on “Scentless” bugs me much. I dig the chorus on “Heart Shaped Box,” but other than that it’s just all right. “Rape me/Rape me my friend” is fun. It’s not something I’ll constantly listen to, but it’s fun. Jay’s cover of “Frances” is better. I don’t care. I’m not going to say the second half of this is bad, but it’s far away from pop. Big ups to “Tourette’s” for being a decent punk tune. It’s so bad it’s good.

Grade: B- (83)

  1. Aww that’s too bad you didn’t see the genius here. And them straying away from “pop” was kinda the point. They deliberately made a rather noisy album as a departure from their relatively polished previous album, Nevermind. Hence working with Albini along with the fact that he engineered two of Cobain’s favorites, The Pixies and The Breeders. The “grunge” label was more of a media thang, the band never called themselves that and besides th muddy guitar sounds best exemplified by Mudhoney, there really is not that many connotations to the genre that separate it from other styles. I feel bad you’re missing out on some great music here. Idk what you’re missing. For me, I still get chills when I hear All Apologies, for example and I first heard that song before I was a teenager! To each his own.
