For a good chunk of us living in the US of A, we will never get to experience Sonny Bryans. I never heard of it until two minutes ago. But but but but but. King Khan enjoys the restaurant so much that he wrote a little song available for listen on the Shrines Myspace page. Here: http://www.myspace.com/kingkhantheshrines
Chris will definitely listen to it because Khan name-drops Mumia Abu-Jamal.
“Sonny Bryan’s Barbecue
Burning hot in my gullet
Makes me want to shave my mullet
Sonny Bryan’s Barbecue
Free ribs, free cole slaw, free Mumia Abu-Jamal!
Sonny Bryan, friend of Kobe Bryant
Missed and loved by us all.”
Oh no, he exposes his left wing ideology that he hides so cleverly under his royal veneer. You people didn’t know about that did you. It’s true, it’s true!
it’s true, everything you heard is true!
you heard i’m no good, yeah yeah, i’m no good!
You have to be a dangerous leftist freak if you say “Free Mumia abdul-Jamal”, after all… and it means only one thing, that you must love cop killers and secretly desire being one yourself! I’ve seen enough madness from the right wing folks out there that it’s just too easy to mock them. As for Khan being left wing, it really is true, though certainly anti-authoritarian, a bit into anarcho-syndicalist territory, he is someone who has sympathies for people with troubles. He has also acknowledged the role of the ‘evil German welfare state’ in allowing him to pursue his music career after he started his family.
I can see syndicalism working in some industries, but as a whole it just doesn’t seem like it’d work out.
Sure, but this isn’t a question of practicality when you’re a musician – you’re supposed to be a dreamer. Didn’t he suggest at one point that he and his ‘death cult’ will set up some kind of music commune in Brazil or something? “Like Jonestown but without the killing and kool-aid(!)” were his words I think.
I guess what I was trying to say was that we don’t often see these people’s political opinions (unless one knows them personally), they just come out in unexpected places, and I wonder if he was aware that certain American sectors see taking up the Mumia cause, even as a joke, to be evidence of evil.
The right wing if it cared what King Khan had to say could have taken some comments he recently made about his 1997 lung surgery as proof of the alleged evil failure of the Canadian health care system. I guess he’s not that important.
