Comment: This album is quite like a lot of what Reatard has done in the past: fast paced, catchy garage punk, yet this time around it’s more accessible (though at some times a smidge more boring). “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me” is in the mix for best song of 2009, while “There Is No Sun” is an extraordinary closer.
Just when I thought that Jay Reatard was done with Harpers Ferry for good (after a rather miserable crowd on July 3)…the garage punk will be back on October 2. His latest release Watch Me Fall will be released on the 18th of this month. Four bands will play before the long haired guitar genius; this could suck a little because Reatard plays on average for only 25 minutes. Will I attend? It’s not out of the question, but I must keep in mind that Dinosaur Jr. is playing the next night at the Middle East.
Black Lips- Not A Problem (2005)
Jay Reatard- D.O.A. (2008) though I think “No Time” is a better tune, I couldn’t find a video for it lol. Probably because it’s so soft.
Deerhunter- Disappearing Ink (2009) This version is softer than the studio version, but it’s still great!
Goes back and forth again. You don’t like what you see. You must not care for me.
Pretty & Nice, TV Smith, Jay Reatard – Harpers Ferry – July 3
Pretty and Nice: Interesting kids…. Their music mixed loud, fast punk with some glimmers of power pop. Musically, they had the chops, but they didn’t stand out more than any other band to me. On the other hand, it was their “antics” that caught my attention. These include singing songs about ponies for mic checks and similar little songs between their actual numbers, making extremely strange, almost robotic faces, often while rocking out on the guitar (mainly this was just one guitarist and it looked as though he would fall at any moment haha).
