The second half of the season could be historic for the Houston Texans. They have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time, with their best record ever (5-3) at the midway point of the season.
After a 1-2 start, the Texans have momentum. Matt Schaub is playing superbly at quarterback, teaming with Andre Johnson to become one of the NFL’s most prolific quarterback-receiver combinations.

Philadelphia Phillies pitchers Brett Myers and Cole Hamels had words after Game 5 of the World Series on Monday, one witness told Yahoo! Sports.
The incident was related to Hamels’ statement after Game 3 that he was looking forward to his frustrating season being over. As Myers walked past Hamels in the locker room Monday he reportedly said sarcastically, “What are you doing here? I thought you quit?”
CLEVELAND – Oh, sure, it looks simple and obvious now. One team was fully ready for an NBA opener, and one team wasn’t.
Doc Rivers would have junked the final two exhibition games if he could. His guys were ready to go. Mike Brown would like another month of training camp.
And so the newly fortified Celtics are off and running in pursuit of championship No. 18. They got one thing out of the way early: with last night’s 95-89 conquest of the Cavaliers they already have won a big game on the road.
I don’t really care about basketball, but I know enough to be impressed that we beat LeBron and Shaq.

The two don’t like each other, apparently so much that when both bands played last month’s FYF Fest in LA, intermediaries feared that fisticuffs might erupt at any moment. The two never crossed paths in LA, though. That changed Saturday night, when both were at Daddy’s Bar in Brooklyn. Someone apparently served someone else a knuckle sandwich.Williams of Wavves, in a MySpace post, describes Swilley as “just looking for a fight at 4 in the morning talking shit to my face and his girlfriend is spitting in the face of all my friends.” Swilley begs to differ, and says a cowardly Williams relied not on his fists but his posse’s: “I’ve never ‘come after’ that kid, it wasn’t four a.m., that wasn’t my girlfriend, no one was spitting, and I didn’t attack him. .. The only thing I did was walk up to him and say ‘You’re that faggot from Wavves and I don’t like you.’ He smiled a bit but didn’t say anything.”
Later in the night Swilley stumbled into Wavves turf, where he “saw their tour manager hanging around with some guys. They started getting all chuckles with me and so I told them I wasn’t gonna have it. After that, Wavves tour manager hit me square in the face with a bottle. Blood started pouring out and six dudes fucking started kicking me until I blacked out.”
How about no violence! Both seem like cool dudes. But wait:
“We’re gonna set up a boxing match between the two kids. We’re getting sponsors now. Jared from The Black Lips told us he’s 100% down to do it and we’re waiting to hear back from Nathan but from what I’ve heard he’s down too. The event itself is gonna be held in Los Angeles, in an actual boxing ring, will be filmed and the winner will not only win a “Buddyhead Title Belt” but he’ll win a large cash prize.”
Keller describes the bill thusly: “Two skinny white dorks with boxing gloves on trying to punch each other.” He also wants them to do a split single on Buddyhead Records: “Diss tracks!”
Swilley has maybe a foot advantage on Williams, who is truly incredibly tiny…Then Swilley just had to be a complete immature asshole:

Playing an oddly listless match while exhibiting the body language of a man undergoing a tax audit, No. 2 seed Andy Murray was battered by No. 16 Marin Cilic in a stunning 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 fourth-round loss on Tuesday that produced a rare men’s upset in the United States Open.
Perhaps more surprising than the result, though, was how it happened. Murray, who used to have a reputation for moping when things went poorly, had climbed to the top of the rankings on his ability to adjust mid-match and create ways to win. But in this match, Murray’s game disintegrated as Cilic, an up-and-coming 20-year-old from Croatia, plowed through the match without showing any emotion.
“It just got away from me,” Murray said. “I couldn’t get myself back in the match. I couldn’t find any way to get into the games and he was dominating the points.”
Murray had come into the tournament looking strong, having won one of the two hard-court warm-up tournaments — in Montreal with a victory over Juan Martin del Potro — and losing to No. 1 Roger Federer in the semifinals of the other in Cincinnati.
But his game had no bite and after Cilic overcame some errors early in the match, he turned all of his varied weapons on a mystified Murray.
The match started slowly, with errors on both sides until they reached 5-5 in the first set. There, Murray played a horrible service game, double-faulting to 0-40 and Cilic converted his first break. He then held off Murray’s attempt to break and grabbed the first set.
“I returned poorly and he served well,” Murray said. “That was really the difference. Once he got that first set, he hit the ball really well and started playing really aggressive.”
Murray visibly sagged after that swing of events and Cilic pounced on his growing vulnerability, breaking Murray in the first game of the second set.
From there, it became a march to Murray’s demise. He hung his head, swung his racket in frustration and swore to no one in particular after one Cilic mis-hit dropped in for a point. After the second set loss, Murray threw his racket to the ground.
From there, Cilic kept his all-business expression and never let Murray back into the match. He was painting the lines with forehand winners while Murray struggled to keep his forehand in the court. Murray never adjusted his game or tried any new tactics, other than growing continually more annoyed at what was happening.
Serving at 2-4 in the third set and defeat seemingly inevitable, Murray played perhaps his most dispirited game, flubbing a forehand into the net to get broken a final time. Cilic served out the set with ease and the upset was complete.
Cilic was not the most likely candidate to pull off this upset. Though on the rise at age 20, having reached his No. 17 ranking, he had never beaten a top-three player. While he is a strong server, it has never been a true weapon in top-tier matches. Against Murray, though, he had 10 aces and faced few challenges on his service games.
Now, he draws del Potro in the quarterfinals after del Potro advanced with a dominating 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero in their fourth-round match.

BOSTON — Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said Thursday the chances of him running to replace Democrat Edward M. Kennedy in the U.S. Senate are “slim to none” but he will not rule it out.The three-time World Series champion said he retired from baseball in March to spare his family the downside of the public spotlight. He has also invested millions in his fledgling video-gaming business, 38 Studios.
Yet the 42-year-old told a Boston radio station that Massachusetts is in “desperate” need of fresh political blood.
“This state, next to Illinois, is probably looked on as one of the most corrupt, laughable political scenes in the nation, and it should be just the opposite,” he said during one of his regular appearances on WEEI-AM, a sports radio station. “I think there’s so much broke here, that the fixing piece, I don’t think you’d have to look very hard to pick up the pieces of debris and start to reform and fix it.”
While Schilling has never run for or held political office, he said it’s an asset because he’s unencumbered by special interest connections.
“Slim to none” people! Stop the hype.

Beloved Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi will announce his retirement Monday morning during a 10:45 a.m. press conference, ending his against-all-odds career after 13 NFL seasons.

It is also probable that Bill Belichick informed Bruschi that he would not be in New England’s plans this season, leading to his decision to call it a career.
A third-round draft pick out of Arizona in 1996, where he became the NCAA’s all-time sacks leader as an undersized defensive end, Bruschi made his bones in New England initially as a special-teams player – his 17 tackles for that unit as a rookie was third on the club.
This is pretty surprising. He’ll be remembered as many fans’ favorite player.
