Who Did it Better? “Maggie’s Farm”

Back with another song, this time I got about as polar opposites as you can get Bob Dylan and Rage Against the Machine doing Dylan’s classic “Maggie’s Farm”

First up, Bob Dylan

Next up, Rage Against the Machine

Although I appreciate Rage Against the Machine version, I am sticking with the original, this is the first song I would say the artist took a little too much creative liberties.

  1. Def original. Poor Dylan being booed at Newport :( Though I’m a way bigger fan of Rage in general. What do you think of the rest of their cover album Renegades, if you have heard it or some of the covers on it.

  2. Honestly I like Rage alot but I am impartial to Renegades. I really think they are one of thoese bands that only work well with orginal material and maybe a handful of cover songs (I think there was only like 2 I diged off the entire album), Maggie’s Farm not one of them. You know they are so in your face and know what they want to do that they when they do a cover song, unless the song falls into their line of thinking, at the end of the day it’s not going to work. But when the write their own material, or does that one cover song such as “Renegades of Funk” or “How I could just kill a man” (that was the real standout to me on the album), few bands are as passoniate or as good as Rage.

  3. Yeah, I hear ya. Most of those covers do feel forced. I agree with How I Could Just Kill A Man. Ghost of Tom Joad and Beautiful World also stood out to me. I really loved BW because I think it was the only time Rage sounded soft. But yeah, for me Rage is one of my favorite bands and one of the few modern mainstream rock bands I really love. Well, I mean they are fairly old, but still. Most bands that appeal to me are of the underground persuasion to different extents as evident by this site. To me, Rage is just one of greatest major Rock and Roll bands in the league of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath- I know that’s a bold statement, but they do have this mass appeal kinda thing going on. And also the way they treat the politics- it’s not just another topic for their songs, it is them. Their politics are identical to them. I can’t think of another band that that can be said for, at least a band I really like.
