Band Recommendation: Red Mass

Red Mass is a group of musicians who fit in the general category of a band. They’re on the psychedelic/experimental side of rock and roll AND will be opening for King Khan and the Shrines at select shows! Among those select shows is the Royale Boston one that we’ll be attending. Ahh, the excitement! Well, anyway, I like what I hear and thought I’d share them with all of you guys. You know, move them to the next level of recognition.

“Male Models” – Haha! This one is funny. They sound like they’ve been at this since the ’80s. The style is dance-rock, but it’s eclectic and nearly parodies mainstream ’80s rock while still maintaining an edge that none of the shitty bands ever had at that time.

  1. Some facts about Red Mass that may interest you people here. To start, it’s the successor band to a band (CPC Gangbangs) that toured with Jay Reatard in 2008. Also, the main mastermind of the band has a long history with King Khan and Mark Sultan, was the guitarist for the Sexareenos, a band with Sultan and the first of the Spaceshits successor bands. He also helped Sultan with his solo recordings and even toured with the King Khan and BBQ Show in the first half of 2009.

  2. On YouTube you should find live footage from 2000 of the Sexareenos playing their signature song live – that song is called “Everybody Sexareenos” and you can see the lineup there. In the front are guitarist and bassist, the latter another former Spaceshit (he was the drummer for them) who delivers the lead vocals (there were two of them in this band). Mark is in the back there as drummer though he used to talk to the audience from there making his usual sour and entertaining remarks. He was Bridge Mixture back then. Also notice the farfisa organ.

  3. Rolling Stone published an article the other day where they are named “The band of the week”. I was amused to see that it noted that one song is sung with “a faux Cockney accent”. Finally, these people are seeing the light!
