In 1985, during a media frenzy about terrorism, the biggest Middle East car bomb happened when the CIA contracted some Saudis to go into Lebanon to blow up some sheikh who was accused of being involved in the Shi’ite resistance to the U.S.- Israeli designs on Lebanon in the early 1980s. They decided to set it off outside a mosque as the people congregated outside after the service. About 80 people or so were killed and the sheikh survived having stayed in the mosque as it happened. This was the biggest car bombing in the area and did they announce to the world that this was the work of the Reagan Administration? No.
Yes, I am aware of this horrible incident of terrorism, I think I heard it from Chomsky himself. I wish others knew more about our government’s real purpose, just the fact that Saddam was armed by the U.S. through his greatest crimes should be common knowledge, but unfortunately it is not even mentioned in debates/discussions. Of course, Saddam is merely one in numerous cruel dictators we have supported, but since he is so widely known by the public, it would be key for them to know this information. Add another perspective.
The long, long, long-time Saudi ambassador to the United States, Bandar I think is his name, described very nonchalantly this attack not long after the September 11th attacks on I think the Charlie Rose show, went on about how this was requested and how they enthusiastically cooperated. It didn’t put him or any of the principals in a good light at all.
The Saddam situation is interesting because a tug of war went on in 1990 over him. There was a real division in the ruling class over him. A key moment in mobilising the forces against him (Israel lobby, rapture cult leading the way) was a speech he made in early April 1990 when he said, “if they attack us, our fire will burn half of Israel”. That started it. Meanwhile, the CIA liked him still and the grain producing states wanted to maintain good relations and Bob Dole went there and Saddam asked about the horrible things being said and Dole said don’t listen to them, we love you still.
After the invasion of Kuwait a bunch of Nostradamus shows were shown to suggest that Saddam was the Third Antichrist. The idea had long been popularised that Nostradamus’ Third Antichrist would emerge in the 1990s and a third world war would happen then.
